In the ever-evolving landscape of laboratory analysis, avoiding data loss and ensuring accurate results are of vital importance, but laboratories face many challenges to ensure precious sample is not wasted and analytical sequences run correctly the first time, keeping throughput as high as possible. These challenges can be associated with examples such as an analytical run coming to an abrupt halt, resulting in sample re-extraction, the need for repeat analysis due to a poor injection or a sample falling outside acceptable tolerances. In particular, unknown samples with analyte concentrations exceeding the upper limit of quantification (ULOQ), can compromise quantification accuracy and increase the risk of carryover to subsequent injections. To address these issues, software can provide automated system suitability testing and in-run decision making for more right first-time analyses.

Enhancing data integrity with SST/IRC

The System Suitability Testing (SST) and Intelligent Run Control (IRC) functionality in Thermo Scientific Chromeleon software is designed to enable real-time monitoring and evaluation of key operational and data processing parameters. This capability allows laboratories to define specific thresholds and automatically respond to deviations, preventing potential issues such as carryover, sample waste and quantification inaccuracies. By automating the evaluation of critical operational conditions and data processing results, Chromeleon software ensures that both chromatography and MS systems operate consistently and within expected parameters, ultimately leading to more accurate and reliable analytical results.

Support for MS instruments

The SST/IRC functionality can be applied to Thermo Scientific mass spectrometers, including single quadrupole, triple quadrupole and HRAM MS. This versatility makes it an invaluable tool for clinical research and forensic toxicology laboratories, where maintaining the integrity and reliability of LC-MS datasets is crucial. The ability to define and execute automated responses to test case outcomes ensures that the system operates within expected parameters, saving precious sample and time for data review.

Real-time decision making

One of the standout features of the SST/IRC functionality is its ability to make real-time decisions based on predefined thresholds. For instance, if an unknown sample has very high analyte concentrations, the system can automatically trigger the “AutoDilution” function, adjusting the injection volume to ensure accurate quantification. This intelligent response helps mitigate the risk of carryover and maintains the integrity of subsequent injections.

Advancing laboratory performance

The SST/IRC capabilities in Chromeleon software provide a robust framework for maintaining the integrity and reliability of LC-MS datasets. By automating the evaluation of critical operational conditions and data processing results, you can enable real-time decision-making to address potential issues promptly. This not only safeguards the quality of the data but also enhances laboratory efficiency, reducing sample waste and minimizing data loss.

The integration of SST/IRC functionality represents a significant advancement in laboratory data management. As laboratories continue to face increasing demands for accuracy and efficiency, tools like SST/IRC will play a crucial role in ensuring reliable and high-quality analytical results.
