Chromatography & Separations Chemistry (SCSC)
Chromatography & Separations Chemistry (SCSC)

The Chromatography & Separations Chemistry Subdivision (SCSC) is a specialized subdivision of the American Chemical Society Division of Analytical Chemistry, dedicated to advancing the field of separation science.

SCSC serves as a central platform for scientists working in chromatography, electrophoresis, and related separation techniques, fostering collaboration, knowledge exchange, and professional growth across academia, industry, and government laboratories. Its activities are focused on promoting innovation, supporting the next generation of scientists, and strengthening the global separations community.

Mission and Vision

SCSC aims to advance separations science through education, collaboration, and recognition. It strives to connect a diverse community of researchers and practitioners, enabling them to share expertise, develop new methodologies, and enhance both scientific progress and career development.

Join the Subdivision

Membership dues to the ACS Division of Analytical Chemistry (ANYL) Subdivision on Chromatography and Separations Chemistry (SCSC) are $5/year.

SCSC Executive Committee Members

The SCSC Executive Committee holds an annual business meeting virtually close to Pittcon. All are welcome to attend and get involved in Subdivision activities and planning.

Emanuela Gionfriddo (Chair)

Emanuela Gionfriddo is an Associate Professor of Chemistry in the Department of Chemistry at the University at Buffalo, the State University of New York. Research work in Dr. Gionfriddo’s lab focuses on developing advanced analytical separation tools for the analysis of complex biological and environmental samples using green extraction methodologies. She received her Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry (2013) at the University of Calabria (Italy). She joined Prof. Pawliszyn’s group at the University of Waterloo (Ontario, Canada) in 2014 as a postdoctoral fellow and manager of the gas chromatography section of the Industrially Focused Analytical Research Laboratory (InFAReL). Dr. Gionfriddo has authored over 60 peer-reviewed contributions, including a patent on PTFE-based SPME coatings. Dr. Gionfriddo is the recipient of the 2024 Chinese American Chromatography Association Young Investigator Award, the 2023 LCGC Emerging Leader in Chromatography Award, the 2023 Eastern Analytical Symposium Young Investigator Award, and the 2022 ACS Analytical Division Satinder Ahuja Award for Young Investigators in Separation Science. Dr. Gionfriddo serves as the Chair-elect of the ACS Analytical Chemistry Subdivision on Chromatography and Separations Chemistry. Her research program is currently funded by the National Science Foundation through the 2022 CAREER Award, the USDA, and several industrial partnerships.

Kate Perrault Uptmor (Chair-elect)

Kate Perrault is an Associate Professor of Forensic Sciences and Chemistry at Chaminade University of Honolulu. She earned a Ph.D. from the University of Technology Sydney and a Bachelor of Science (Hons.) in forensic sciences from the University of Ontario Institute of Technology. She specializes in the development of multidimensional separations for the comprehensive characterization of odors of forensic relevance. Kate is the Principal Investigator of the Laboratory of Forensic and Bioanalytical Chemistry, which is supported through several federal grants, foundation grants, and industry support. She researches decomposition odor for forensic search and recovery, and mentors numerous undergraduate researchers as part of her integrated teaching and research program. Her current interests include odor production from postmortem microbes, development of data processing workflows for multidimensional chromatography, promoting the adoption of multidimensional separations in the forensic sciences, and producing curriculum on multidimensional separations to be taught in undergraduate chemistry classes.

Jim Grinias (Past Chair)

Jim Grinias is a Professor at Rowan University. His research focuses on the fundamentals of separations, especially in capillary columns and microfluidic devices. He also is interested in implementing new educational technologies to help enhance the instruction of chemical instrumentation and analytical techniques. He has served the professional community on the HPLC 2016, 2018, and 2022 Symposium Organizing Committees and as an executive committee member of the Chromatography Forum of Delaware Valley and the ACS Subcommittee on Chromatography and Separations Chemistry.

  • Caitlin Cain (Secretary)
  • Jonathan Edelman (Treasurer)
  • Amber Hupp (Chair of the Finance Subcommittee)
  • Jonathan Shackman (Executive Committee)
  • Hayley Brawley (Executive Committee)
  • David Hage (Executive Committee)
  • Walter Brent Wilson (Executive Committee)

Key Activities

The subdivision actively contributes to the analytical chemistry community through:

  • Organization of symposia and technical sessions at ACS national and regional meetings
  • Support for students and early-career researchers via fellowships, travel grants, and awards
  • Promotion of emerging trends and innovations in chromatography and separation techniques
  • Development of educational resources and dissemination of career opportunities

Awards and Recognition

SCSC plays a major role in recognizing excellence in separation science. It supports and promotes prestigious awards such as the Joseph J. Kirkland Award in Chromatography and the Young Investigators in Separation Science Award, along with student-focused fellowships and travel grants that help young scientists gain visibility and experience.

SCSC Programming Micro-Grants

The Subdivision on Chromatography and Separations Chemistry (SCSC) of the ACS Division of Analytical Chemistry invites proposals from subdivision members for small grants to support separations science programming at local and regional meetings. Members may request $100–$500 to defray costs associated with speaker honoraria, travel costs, refreshments, or similar expenses for a symposium, poster session, networking event, or similar activity.

To apply, please submit the name(s) and contact information of the organizers (including at least one SCSC member), the name/date/location of the conference, a brief description of the intended activity (~250 words), and a short budget justification.

Awards will be made on a rolling basis until allocated funds for the fiscal year have been expended. Please allow 4–5 weeks for a decision on applications. Applications and questions may be directed to the Subdivision’s Chair-elect, Jim Grinias at [email protected].

Community and Networking

Beyond scientific programming, SCSC builds a strong professional network through social engagement, conference participation, and initiatives like programming micro-grants that support local and regional events. These activities reinforce its role as a key connector within the global separations science community.
