Labs FSP Scientist - Mass Spec, Chromatography

Thermo Fisher's clinical research business is a leading global contract research organization and world leader in serving science. We are passionate, deliberate, and driven by our mission – to enable our customers to make the world healthier, safer, and cleaner.

Within our Analytical Services team, we have a functional service provider solution, which is a unique partnership that allows our customers to leverage the experience of our staff, while allowing you, the employee, to gain direct experience working onsite at a pharmaceutical/ biopharmaceutical company, all while maintaining full-time benefits.

Summarized Purpose:

As a Scientist, you will be a part of the Analytical Characterization Group (ACG) within the Analytical Development Department. ACG focuses on providing routine, investigative, and in-depth characterization analyses of biologics to support product and process development for early-phase, late-phase, and commercial programs using liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC-MS), spectroscopy and various other biophysical assays.

The successful candidate will contribute to the development and performance of analytical assays and will contribute to the continuous improvement and innovation within ACG and the Analytical Development Department.

Essential Functions:

  • Perform mass spectrometry analyses (i.e., intact/reduced mass analysis by LC-MS and peptide mapping by LC-MS) of biologics to provide sequence verification and post-translational modification profiles.
  • Perform chromatography and separation methods (e.g., fractionation of variants) and biophysical methods (e.g., DSC) of biologics to support characterization studies.
  • Design and execute experiments for method development and/or investigations under the guidance of a senior scientist.
  • Generate and communicate precise, reliable, and reproducible data in a timely manner.
  • Organize and document experiments and results in an electronic laboratory notebook.
  • Support general lab activities such as instrument maintenance and calibrations as well as maintain system suitability.
  • Draft protocols, method development reports, and technical characterization reports.
  • Maintain lab equipment.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelors or Masters in chemistry, biology, biochemistry or related technical discipline with typically 2+ (BS) or 0+ (MS) years of relevant experience in biotech/pharmaceutical industry setting.
  • In some cases, an equivalency, consisting of a combination of appropriate education, training and/or directly related experience, will be considered sufficient for an individual to meet the requirements of the role.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Experience with protein mass spectrometry, liquid chromatography, capillary electrophoresis and protein biophysical characterization.
  • Understanding of protein structure, post-translational modifications, and analytical methods used for protein characterization.
  • Working knowledge of bioinformatics tools to process and analyze mass spectrometry data is highly desirable.
  • Proficient with Windows 10 and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint).
  • Excellent written communication, oral communication, organization, and multitasking skills.
  • Hardworking and motivated to drive both efficiency and quality.
  • Understand and adhere to corporate standards regarding code of conduct, safety, and appropriate handling of materials.

  • Able to communicate, receive, and understand information and ideas with diverse groups of people in a comprehensible and reasonable manner.
  • Able to work upright and stationary and/or standing for typical working hours.
  • Able to lift and move objects up to 25 pounds.
  • Able to work in non-traditional work environments.
  • Able to use and learn standard office equipment and technology with proficiency.
  • May have exposure to potentially hazardous elements, including infectious agents, typically found in healthcare or laboratory environments.
  • Able to perform successfully under pressure while prioritizing and handling multiple projects or activities.
