Laboratory Team Lead, Organic Prep

About the Position

This role is responsible for sample preparation and submissions, sampling media preparation and maintaining turnaround, allocating resources, quality control and leading personnel.

Specific Responsibilities

Workload and turnaround
  •    Day-to-day coordinating of team personnel, work schedule, and resources to maximize production, quality and efficiency;
  •    Ensuring processing of work in a timely fashion so that the team can meet client turnaround times and holding time requirements;
  •    Performing digestion and extraction of all basic and complex sample types within the team as required;
  •    Performing all clean-up and submission procedures on various sample matrices.
  •    Communicating with Client Services and team staff regarding specific client needs;
  •    Informing supervisor of any issues related to production, quality and efficiency within the team;
  •    Bring forth ideas on efficiency and productivity and ensure the department is operating at peak potential.
Coordinates use of resources and facility areas used by the team:
  •    Continual assessment of needs including ordering supplies;
  •    Ensuring all equipment maintenance and calibration is properly conducted and documented;
  •    Addressing day-to-day technical issues related to production and operation.
Ensures the quality of all work performed in the laboratory
  •    Ensuring analytical results meet client needs;
  •    Ensuring that all required record-keeping and documentation are carried out within the team;
  •    Ensuring all tasks and procedures are carried out as specified in the documented methods and/or procedures;
  •    Suggesting appropriate preparatory techniques for  non-routine sample types;
  •    Providing input on current team methods and procedures for writing and review;
Leading of personnel
  •    Promoting safety awareness and practices;
  •    Bringing staff concerns to the attention of management;
  •    Providing feedback and assistance to the Supervisor on all aspects of team members’ performance for evaluations, rewards and issue resolution;
  •    Identifying training needs of team members – coordinating and/or performing said training;
  •    Identifying staffing needs of the team;
  •    Training and orienting new and existing staff; assist with selection of new staff.
Other
  •    Playing an active role in promoting and clarifying company policies, procedures etc;
  •    Review and write SOP's;
  •    Complete CAR investigations and Audit Findings;
  •    Use correct methods in accordance with the established procedures and schedules while ensuring analytical quality;
  •    Observe established safety regulations and comply with all ALS health and safety policies and procedures;
  •    Other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  •    Good English communication skills required (auditory, verbal, written, and reading);
  •    Intermediate user of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook), with basic computer skills;
  •    Accurate and efficient data entry skills;
  •    Ability to perform repetitive tasks accurately in a fast-paced environment;
  •    Well organized, with the ability to meet strict deadlines;
  •    Strong attention to detail;
  •    Analytical and process oriented, with the ability to critically think in ambiguous situations;
  •    Strong work ethic and willingness to take on varied tasks as required;
  •    Excellent communication skills with the ability to understand and carry out detailed instructions.

Required Qualifications

  •    Degree or technical diploma in chemistry or related science discipline;
  •    3 or more years of experience working in a fast-paced, production, and/or preparation environment;
  •    Experience with training and developing staff an asset.

Physical Demands

  •    Manual dexterity to perform intricate and/or repetitive tasks;
  •    This position requires a person to stand up to 8 hours per day;
  •    This position requires a person to lift up to 30 lbs. on a regular basis and carry for short distances;
  •    You may be exposed to unpleasant odours;
  •    This position requires a person to be clean shaven in order to safely wear a solvent respirator;
  •    Please note that ALS operates 24/7 and will require day, afternoon, and graveyard shift work including weekends.

  •    An estimated hourly pay of $26.65 CAD at the time of posting. Individual compensation is determined by factors such as job-related skills, relevant experience, education and/or training.
