Principal Scientist (HPLC R&D)

PRINCIPAL SCIENTIST (HPLC R&D)
Restek R&D is seeking an Organic/inorganic/polymer Principal Scientist with experience in chromatography media development. Candidate will execute synthesis, characterization, and analysis of exploratory materials for chromatography applications.
Duties will require Research and Development in the areas of silicone chemistry, nanoparticles, porous silica, and surface modification to lead applied research projects to develop and test new and alternative materials for next generation chromatography supports. Scientist will work in research laboratory, scale up the chromatography support development and characterize material for molecular separation. In addition to technical skills, well-rounded candidates should have the ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team and give clear, compelling presentations, take initiative, work independently, rapidly grasp new concepts, and meet deadlines.
Job Duties:
Perform research and evaluation of new and/or existing product technology and execute independent research plans as assigned. Identify new product opportunities and improvements to existing products.
Design experiments with minimal supervision, perform experiments and collect data to support products within assigned area. Develop, and test new products and/or materials utilizing current analytical methods, techniques and instrumentation as appropriate. Ensure that products and materials are of sufficient quality and quantity to meet production demand.
Document all steps, experiments and/or procedures in the development process as required and write experience reports detailing experimental design, results and conclusions. Review documentation for accuracy and completeness. Communicate progress on projects through reports and meetings. Develop new product instruction sheets, specifications, and testing parameters as necessary and circulate for review and comment with the appropriate departments.
Transfer new products to QC, PDG and AD and train these groups as necessary. Work with departments to resolve product quality problems.
Answer customer inquiries relating to area of expertise, specifically any call transfers from primary technical service personnel or customer service representatives. Provide customer (internal and external) training as required.
Maintain regular contact with sales & marketing and other departments to obtain input on new products and customer needs. Establish relationships with customers through visits with sales representatives, phone conversations, and specialized product follow-ups.
Prepare written articles and/or generate publishable data for use by the marketing and technical service areas, and review literature used to market Restek products. Represent Restek at conferences and technical meetings, including preparing and conducting technical presentations.
Publish technically work externally and/or internally.
Mentor less experienced scientists and engineers.
Provide analytical support for PDG, R&D, QS, and Quality Control, when needed.
Practice safe working procedures and follow guidelines specified by the Environmental Health and Safety Department, especially when working in production and laboratory areas. Understand the safe handling of materials and the quality of processes under the domain of the job responsibilities.
Participate in continuous learning and education to keep current with industry and grow knowledge and skills in area of work.

Qualifications:
Education/Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or other related science plus 15 years of experience OR Master’s degree plus 10 years of experience OR PhD plus 5 years of experience.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Understanding of complex work such that they can act as an internal and external consultant in area of expertise.
Can lead the technology, discipline or market in their assigned area.
Ability to mentor the science of chromatography or related field.
Ability to organize, prepare, and present oral and written communication for publishing.
Able to construct and convey complex scientific presentations throughout the organization.
Knowledge of chemical safety, composition, structure, & properties, including uses of chemicals.
