LC-MS/MS is recognized as gold-standard technology for many applications in the clinical laboratory.

Kicking off the session, Davison will focus on personalized medicine needs and how mass spectrometry can make a difference in the laboratory service. Following this, Carling will highlight how easy it can be to implement fully automated LC-MS/MS technology in a routine clinical laboratory workflow, through an evaluation of the first fully automated clinical analyzer based on LC-MS/MS: the Cascadion SM Clinical analyzer1.

Part 1: Has mass spectrometry got the answers personalized medicine needs?

Presenter: Dr. Andrew Davison (Consultant Clinical Scientist and Clinical Lead for R&D, Liverpool University Teaching Hospitals, Liverpool, UK)

Dr. Andrew Davison is a consultant clinical scientist and the clinical lead for research and development at the Liverpool University Teaching Hospitals, Liverpool, UK.

Part 2: Evaluation of the Thermo Scientific™ Cascadion™ SM Clinical Analyzer in the clinical laboratory: Vitamin D and immunosuppressant drugs

Presenter: Dr. Rachel Carling (Consultant Scientist and Director of Biochemical Sciences, Viapath-St Thomas’ Hospital, London, UK)

After graduating with a first class honours degree in chemistry, Rachel received a Ph.D. for her work on the development and application of Technetium-99 accelerator mass spectrometry. She completed her Clinical Scientist training in Leeds and chose to specialize in metabolic biochemistry because of her interest in analytical techniques such as mass spectrometry and chromatography.

She worked as a senior clinical scientist at Great Ormond Street Hospital and following her HCPC state registration, she obtained an HST post at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge. In 2007, she was awarded FRCPath and a year later she began working at Guy's and St Thomas’ Hospital where she is currently a consultant scientist and Director of Biochemical Sciences.

Her area of interest is inherited metabolic disease with a particular interest in the application of tandem mass spectrometry to the measurement of small molecules; she is passionate about science and committed to service improvement and believes that new developments in mass spectrometry and successful translation of these into the clinical laboratory are going to be key to the future of the service.

Key learning objectives:

  • Advantages of LC-MS/MS technology in the clinical laboratory
  • Whether mass spectrometry has the answers for personalized medicine needs
  • How the Cascadion SM Clinical Analyzer can provide a turnkey solution for clinical labs to easily access the power of LC-MS/MS
  • LC-MS/MS applications: Vitamin D and the therapeutic pharmacological drug monitoring of immunosuppressants

Who should attend:

  • Clinical, hospital, and reference laboratory stakeholders
  • Laboratory directors, laboratory managers, quality managers, information technology managers
  • Clinical laboratory scientists and technicians

Moderator: Thomas Casburn (Editorial Team, SelectScience)

Tom studied biology at the University of Bristol, UK, and as a member of the editorial team, plays an integral role in shaping the content on SelectScience.
