A Guide to Mass Spectrometry for the Absolute Beginner

Key Learning Points:
  • What type of measurements can be done with a mass spec detector?
  • What type of molecules can be detected?
  • What are isotopes and why are they important?
  • What is mass-to-charge ratio and how is it used?
  • How do ions get a charge so we can analyze them?

How To Select The Right Reverse Phase Column Based On Various Compound Classes

Key Learning Points:
  • How are Resolution & Selectivity Related?
  • What are Stationary Phase Characteristics?
  • How to Select a Stationary Phase Based On Compound Classes?
  • Hydrophobicity / Methylene Selectivity
  • Steric Selectivity / Aromaticity
  • H2 bond donating capacity / H2 bond acidity
  • H2 bond accepting capacity / H2 bond basicity
  • Cation Selectivity at pH 2.8 & 7.0

Presenter: Dr. Brad Patterson (Manager, Applications Support, SCIEX Australia/New Zealand)

Brad Patterson obtained his PhD in Chemistry at James Cook University in 2003 and has been involved with Mass Spectrometry ever since. Brad is based in Melbourne, Victoria and has worked for SCIEX for just over 14 years. He has been training people on and performing LCMS development for over 18 years and in this time has supported many applications in many industries throughout the world but primarily in ANZ.

Presenter: Namrata Saxena (Technical Specialist, Phenomenex Australia/New Zealand)

Namrata Saxena is a Technical Specialist with Phenomenex and is based in Sydney, Australia.

She has a post graduate degree with a specialization in Analytical Chemistry from Jiwaji University, India. Namrata has extensive experience with analytical chemistry specially in the Liquid chromatography domain.

Before joining Phenomenex, she was as a Product Specialist and spent several years in column chemistry, column manufacturing and method development in the application and manufacturing labs of Bischoff Chromatography, Germany.

She has also gained research experience working in the Central Instrumentation Laboratory of India’s sole Pulp and Paper Research Organization.
In her present role as a Technical Specialist she provides technical assistance to customers globally, her current focus being on Omics and biologics product, application and troubleshooting support.
