Efficient sample preparation before LC-MS/MS analysis of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) is an important consideration for research laboratories performing clinical analysis. Phospholipids (PPLs) have been identified as a major cause of matrix effects in the LC-MS/MS analysis of serum samples.

In this webinar, Joseph Homan, Senior Scientist III at NMS labs, will describe serum sample preparation and LC-MS/MS analysis of PFASs using protein precipitation followed by PPL removal using the Agilent Captiva EMR-Lipid cartridges. Captiva EMR-Lipid cartridges produce cleaner extracts, with the removal of over 99% of unwanted PPLs from serum matrix, which reduces matrix ion suppression effects and system contamination. Homan will describe how using the Captiva EMR-Lipid cartridges analysis of PFASs at concentrations as low as 0.05 ng/mL yielded ideal peak shapes with good signal-to-noise (S/N) and linear calibration curves.

Key Learning Objectives

  • Understand how Captiva EMR-Lipid cartridges selectively extract matrix lipids without removal of PFASs
  • Discover how Captiva EMR-Lipid cartridges allow for a simple extraction that reduces the risk of contamination by PFASs
  • Learn how Captiva EMR-Lipid cartridges use universal extraction that allows for analysis of acidic and neutral PFASs without compromise of extraction cleanliness.

Who Should Attend

  • Clinical research staff
  • Food testing teams
  • Those involved in environmental sample preparation and analysis

Presenter: Joseph Homan (Senior Scientist III, NMS Labs)

Joseph Homan is a Senior Scientist III at NMS Labs in Horsham, Pennsylvania. He leads clinical and forensic analytical test development and validation, recommends and implements scientific innovations, and explores new and optimizes current instrumentation and methodologies to improve quality, efficiency, profitability, and service.

Presenter: Blake Forman (Editorial Team, SelectScience)

Blake studied chemistry at the University of Surrey, UK, and further went on to study a master’s in chemistry at the University of Southampton, UK. Blake has previously worked in the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) lab at LGC and as a technical sales specialist for Waters. As a member of the Editorial team, he now plays an integral role in shaping the content on SelectScience.
