In Europe, haloacetic acids (HAAs) have been recently regulated in drinking water due to their health effects. These compounds are the second most prevalent class of disinfection byproducts in drinking water after trihalomethanes (THMs). To date, most of the analytical techniques used to analyze HAAs are based on of liquid or gas chromatography coupled with single or triple quadrupole detectors. Both techniques are often preceded by time-consuming and costly preparation steps. Hence, novel methods that take into account the challenge to analyses highly polar pesticides in drinking water and in the environment should be developed.

French School of Public Health (LERES/EHESP) has developed the first analytical method for the analysis of both HAAs and polar pesticides with an IC-MS/MS. The method is simple, without sample preparation, very sensitive and solvent free. The method have been validated according to the French committee of accreditation. The analytical method and validation data will be presented in this webinar.

Key Learning Objectives

  • The latest IC-MS/MS technique for HAAs per EPA Method 557
  • Recent developments in analysis of HAAs for process optimization and compliance monitoring

Who Should Attend

  • Water utility operators interested in analysis of disinfection byproducts for compliance monitoring
  • Scientists interested in the latest developments in analytical methods
  • Lab managers who are considering new IC instrumentation for these applications

Presenter: Mari-Vorgan Louyer (Responsable Analyse Chimie, French School of Public Health (LERES/EHESP))

Mari-Vorgan Louyer has been working in the field of analytical chemistry for nearly 20 years. She joined the environment and health research laboratory of the French School of Public Health (LERES/EHESP) in 2005, first as an analyst and since 2011 as a team leader. She has implemented and runs a wide range of physicochemical methods such as automated colorimetry (continuous flow, discrete analysis), electrochemistry, volumetry, ion chromatography, gravimetry in environmental matrices (water, air, soil). Analytical results are produced under COFRAC (French Accreditation Committee) accreditation for sanitary control and research activities. Each year, about 50,000 results are produced, and 96% of these results are accredited. Mari-Vorgan is also in charge of developing innovative analytical methods, including methods based on ion chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry. For the last 10 years, she has successfully implemented under accreditation several IC methods such as 2D ion chromatography, IC-MS, and IC-MS/MS.Mari-Vorgan Louyer has been working in the field of analytical chemistry for nearly 20 years.
