Agilent Technologies: Multiplatform Untargeted Metabolomics (LC/MS, GC/MS, CE/MS) vs Semitargeted LC/MS for Lipids and Polar Compounds

Given the differences in physicochemical properties and concentrations of metabolites in biological systems, getting a broad metabolite coverage in untargeted metabolomics is always challenging in terms of the instrumental techniques that are necessary.

Two approaches are currently in use:
  1. Using LC/Q-TOF MS for lipidomics; GC/MS for small metabolites that can be made volatile by derivatization and CE/MS for polar and ionic compounds.
  2. LC/Q-TOF MS for lipidomics and LC/QQQ MS for polar and semipolar compounds.

Even a third approach with LC/Q-TOF MS using either C18 column for lipids or HILIC for more polar compounds could be used.

Advantages and limitations of these analytical platforms will be discussed with some examples from our laboratory.

Presenter: Coral Barbas (Full Professor of Analytical Chemistry at Pharmacy Faculty and Director for the CEMBIO, Universidad San Pablo CEU)

She is currently Full Professor of Analytical Chemistry at Pharmacy Faculty, Universidad San Pablo CEU, Madrid (Spain) and Director for the “Centre for Metabolomics and Bioanalysis” (CEMBIO). She is also Director for CEU International School of Doctorate (CEINDO); Visiting Professor at Imperial College London.

She is the author of more than 300 papers, with current research interests in all the steps of multiplatform metabolomics (GC-MS, LC-MS and CE-MS) in all kind of biological samples.

Her awards include: Tswett - Nernst European Award of the European Society for Separation Sciences (EuSSS) (2022); the award of the Belgian Society of Pharmaceutical Sciences (BSPS 2018); Angel Herrera Research and Teaching Award and the medal of Bialystok Medical University. She has received a Honoris causa doctorate in Bialystok Medical University.

She is in the “world’s top 2% scientists list” of Stanford University. Member of different boards of international Committees and Editor for Journal of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Analysis till 2021.
