Waters Corporation: Evaluation of a small footprint time-of-flight mass spectrometer as walk-up system in a pharmaceutical laboratory

Open access-mass spectrometry (OA-MS) is a key analytical platform in modern synthetic chemistry laboratories. The approach allows synthetic chemists to perform MS analysis independently, answering questions without delays that could be encountered when specialist involvement is required.

The increased confidence gained via accurate mass measurement in understanding the elemental composition of a reaction mixture is a step-change for the synthetic chemist. The need to complement MS data with other analytical measurements is potentially removed, thus enabling faster decision-making. These efficiency gains further enhance the impact of OA-MS in the pharmaceutical industry, accelerating development of new medicines for global health benefit.

This webinar focuses on the following:
  • The performance evaluation of the Waters ACQUITY RDa, a small footprint benchtop time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectrometer

  • The suitability of the Waters ACQUITY RDa as walk-up system, achieved using SpectralWorks RemoteAnalyzer®

Key Learning Objectives:
  • Explore the potential of accessible accurate mass measurements for non-MS experts
  • Discover the benefit of walk-up solution components
  • Increase your knowledge in a customer laboratory set-up with example showcasing of all the steps: acquire, process and report results

Presenter: Stephen W. Holman (Associate Principal Scientist in Mass Spectrometry, AstraZeneca)

Stephen is an associate principal scientist at AstraZeneca, leading mass spectrometry activities in late-stage chemistry. He was awarded a PhD from the University of Southampton in 2010 under the supervision of Professor John Langley, collaborating with Pfizer on the application of tandem mass spectrometry to small molecule drug metabolite structural elucidation. Stephen was a post-doc at the Universities of Manchester and Liverpool, working in the area of quantitative proteomics, before joining Waters as a senior applications chemist specialising in biopharmaceuticals. He then joined AZ in late 2018. Stephen has published 30 papers on the application of mass spectrometry, and is currently chair of the associate editorial board of Rapid Communications in Mass Spectrometry.

Presenter: Scott J Campbell (Director and Chief Scientific Officer, SpectralWorks Limited)

Scott Campbell has over 25 years of experience in the design and development of software solutions for mass spectrometry users. He has been the technical lead in projects ranging from designing MS data systems with instrument control, through to the development of programming interfaces (API) that allow third party developers to interface their software with MS platforms. Scott is a co-founder of SpectalWorks and specializes in translating end user requirements from MS scientists into specifications for the software team. He is passionate about delivering the best solution to increase productivity and reduce overheads within the laboratory. Prior to SpectralWorks, Scott was Software Manager for ThermoFisher Scientific in Manchester, UK. Scott received a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from the University of Stirling, Scotland. He is a professional member of the British Computer Society and a registered IT Technician.

Presenter: Sara Tufi, Ph.D (EMEA Field Marketing Manager, Waters Corporation)

Sara is a Field Marketing Manager at Waters focusing on the contract pharmaceutical industry. She graduated in Chemistry from the University “La Sapienza” of Rome, Italy and holds a PhD in Analytical Chemistry from the VU University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands. She has previously worked at Waters as EMEA Business Development Manager for LC-MS informatics. Her passion is translating technical information into impactful and compelling scientific messaging to drive innovations in analytical laboratories.
