Welcome to Thermo Fisher Scientific 2022 Detection and Quantification of PFAS in Air, Water, Soil, and Food Packaging e-learning series.

In the second event of our three-part eSeminar series, three leading experts in PFAS analysis will discuss sample preparation and analysis methods for measuring PFAS in water and soil, including:

  • Combustion ion chromatography (CIC)
  • Liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC-MS)
  • Accelerated solvent extraction with solid phase extraction (SPE) clean-up

Presenter: Dr. Susan Richardson (Arthur Sease Williams Professor of Chemistry, University of South Carolina)

Dr. Susan Richardson is the Arthur Sease Williams Professor of Chemistry at the University of South Carolina, and was formerly at the U.S. EPA for many years. Susan’s main research surrounds the study of toxicologically important disinfection by-products in drinking water. Susan served the last 2 years as President of the American Society for Mass Spectrometry and is Associate Editor for Environmental Science & Technology. She received the American Chemical Society (ACS) Award for Creative Advancements in Environmental Science & Technology (2008), an Honorary Doctorate from Cape Breton University (2006), an AAAS Fellow (2019), an ACS Fellow (2016), the Herty Medal (2020), the Southern Chemist Award (2020), the Walter J. Weber, Jr. AEESP Frontier in Research Award (2021), and the Analytical Scientist Power List (2021 and 2019). Susan has published >190 journal articles and book chapters and writes an invited biennial review for Analytical Chemistry, entitled “Water Analysis: Emerging Contaminants and Current Issues”. She has a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Emory University and a B.S. in Chemistry & Mathematics from Georgia College & State University.

Presenter: Dr. Kevin Mchale (Staff Scientist, Field Applications, Thermo Fisher Scientific)

Starting his career in 1994 at DuPont Merck, Kevin helped implement “walk-up” LC-MS to support synthetic chemists. In 1997, Kevin left to pursue his Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry under the direction of Rick Yost at the University of Florida. With 18 years at Thermo Fisher Scientific, Kevin specializes in LC-MS method development for quantitative analyses on Thermo Scientific™ triple quadrupole MS systems and Thermo Scientific™ Q Exactive™ hybrid quadrupole-Orbitrap mass spectrometers.

Presenter: Dr. Carl Fisher (Product Marketing Manager, Thermo Fisher Scientific)

Carl is currently a Product Marketing Manager in the Ion Chromatography/Sample Preparation (IC/SP) business unit of the Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry Division (CMD) of Thermo Fisher Scientific. He obtained a PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Alberta in Edmonton, AB, which was followed by a post-doctoral fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA. Upon joining Thermo Fisher Scientific, he spent several years as an analytical chemist in the Applications Lab, producing technical and application notes. In his current role, he drives the delivery of IC and sample preparation solutions for the environmental market.
