Thermo Scientific: Non-targeted screening to assess drinking water treatment

Monitoring the disinfection byproducts (DBPs) provides essential data to optimize drinking water treatment processes and is critical for compliance with drinking water regulations.

In this webinar, hear Mark Collins, the research and development manager at Northern Ireland Water, present his water catchment profiling study using high-resolution accurate mass spectrometer (HRAM) to screen for unknown disinfection byproducts (DBPs).

Mark's study initially started with monitoring known contaminants (Acid herbicides). However, following a succession of weather incidents in the catchment area under investigation, this study evolved into investigating the formation of potentially harmful DBPs resulting from the interaction of dissolved organic carbon and water treatment. Mark's talk is a short look at the present with a solid view for the future.

Learning points:

  • Workflows for unknown contaminant screening

  • Generate more data from one injection

  • Using HRAM to exceed water regulation requirements

Who should attend:

  • Environmental water testing laboratories

  • Laboratory scientists and technicians using LC-MS

  • Water and environmental analytical chemistry laboratory managers

Presenter: Mark Collins (R&D Manager, Northern Ireland Water)

Mark Collins has worked in the water industry for over 15 years. He is currently the R&D Manager for Northern Ireland Water where he is focusing on new emerging areas of concern and innovative technologies to support our analytical service provision at NI Water. Mark’s interests are primarily in trace analysis of both organic and inorganic pollutants as well as the study of the creation disinfection by-products, their proliferation and effects on the wider water networks.
