Thermo Scientific: Empowering single cell proteomics with Orbitrap Astral

Did you miss Live from the Lab or do you just want to catch it again…?

Following the popular success of the in-person and livestream Live from the Lab event we wanted to give another opportunity to see some of the excellent presentations from that day.

Join us for the first of these webinar events where we will share some of the cutting-edge scientific research shown by our collaborators. The initial session is Orbitrap Astral: Enabling Single Cell Proteomics. We will feature an introduction to the recently launched Thermo™ Scientific Orbitrap™ Astral™ mass spectrometer from its inventor, Professor Alexander Makarov. The Orbitrap Astral offers faster throughput, deeper coverage, higher sensitivity, and accurate and precise quantitation – setting a new standard for mass spectrometry performance and redefining what is possible for discovery and translational research.

There will then be two presentations from academic users who are beginning to explore the incredible possibilities of this instrument. Sophia Steigerwald from Professor Matthias Mann’s research group at the Max-Planck-Institute of Biochemistry in Munich will discuss DIA with non-isobaric multiplexing and Benjamin Furtwängler from Professor Bo Toben Porse’s group at Copenhagen University will share his research on Single-cell proteomics for the exploration of cell heterogeneity.

Join us online for a second chance to see these important presentations in this rapidly developing area of proteomics with the opportunity for a live Q&A with the experts.

Learning points:

  • View the latest research in single cell proteomics

  • Learn about the new Orbitrap Astral MS

  • Discover how your research can be empowered

Who should attend:

  • Researchers in the field of single cell proteomics

  • Laboratory professionals interested in proteomics mass spectrometry

  • Users of mass spectrometry in the life science arena

Presenter: Alexander Makarov (Director, Global Research LSMS, Thermo Fisher Scientific)

Alexander Makarov was born in the Siberian town of Irkutsk in 1966 and went to study in Moscow Engineering Physics Institute where he also obtained his PhD. After 2 post-doc years at Warwick Univ., he joined a small high-tech company HD Technologies in Manchester (UK).

There he started his work on the Orbitrap mass analyzer. Following the acquisition of the firm by Thermo Electron Corp. in 2000, Alexander provided scientific leadership of the Orbitrap R&D which led to the commercial launch of LTQ Orbitrap mass spectrometer in 2005 and subsequent numerous extensions of this technology. He has received multiple awards, including the award for Distinguished Contribution in Mass Spectrometry of ASMS, Thomson medal of IMSF, and Aston medal from BMSS. He holds the position of Director of Research, Life Science Mass Spectrometry in Bremen, Germany, and Chair in High Resolution Mass Spectrometry at Utrecht University in Netherlands.

Presenter: Sophia Steigerwald (PhD Student, Department of Proteomics and Signal Transduction - Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry)

Sophia Steigerwald received her Bachelor's and Master of Science degrees from the Technical University Munich in Molecular Biotechnology and Biochemistry respectively. For her master thesis she worked in the Mass Spectrometry for Quantitative Proteomics Group at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Protein Research under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Jesper Olsen on dynamic protein sub-cellular localization by mass spectrometry (MS) as well as MS technology. She is currently doing her PhD as an IMPRS graduate student at the Max Planck Institute for Biochemistry in Martinsried, Germany, were she works under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Matthias Mann. Her PhD research focuses on MS technology, method development and clinical proteomics in the context of cardiovascular diseases.

Presenter: Benjamin Furtwängler (PhD student, Porse Group at the Copenhagen University)

Benjamin Furtwängler is a PhD student in the Porse Group at the Copenhagen University. The group is part of the Finsen Laboratory, a department for basic cancer research, and is interested in understanding stem cells and their differentiation in hematopoiesis and leukemia.

Benjamin is also supervised by Erwin Schoof, Associate Professor at the Technical University of Denmark. Erwin’s group is developing mass spectrometry-based single-cell proteomics methods and together with the Porse group, aims to apply these methods to further the understanding of stems cells in healthy and malignant hematopoiesis.

He earned his bachelor's and master's degree from the Technical University Berlin, during which time he conducted research utilizing mass spectrometry-based proteomics methods in both the Rappsilber Laboratory and the Selbach Laboratory.

Presenter: Paul Humphrey (Senior Regional Marketing Manager – LSMS & Omics, Thermo Fisher Scientific)

Paul Humphrey has a degree in Analytical Chemistry and a PhD in Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry from the University of Manchester. He previously managed a contract analysis laboratory before moving into a career in the scientific manufacturing industry. Initially an application chemist and product manager he transitioned into marketing when he joined Thermo Fisher Scientific and has since then he has worked in a variety of roles within factory, field marketing and sales office organisations and has been variously responsible for business in EMA, AMER and APJ regions.
