Red wine is a complex matrix rich in flavonoids. These antioxidants represent an extensive class of compounds with more than 10,000 reported examples. Ideally, wines could be evaluated and differentiated based on their complex flavonoid profiles. Complicating matters however is the limited number of authentic flavonoid standards available for identifying unknown flavonoids from different varieties of grape or wines from grapes grown in different regions or climates.

Analysis on the using multi-stage fragmentation, known as MSn, can provide information-rich spectral trees that can help facilitate identification of these unknowns based on similar structural features.

In addition, using an intelligent data acquisition algorithm known as AcquireX, more data on low abundance components can be obtained.

In this webinar, we discuss LC-MSn analysis using the Thermo Scientific™ Orbitrap ID-X™ Tribrid™ mass spectrometer to identify how wines from different grape varieties and regions differ in their flavonoid profiles.

Presenter: Brandon Bills (Product Manager, Thermo Fisher Scientific)

Brandon Bills earned his associate’s degree in science from Kankakee Community College in 2009 and his bachelor's degree in chemistry from Eastern Illinois University in 2012. Following his undergraduate work, Brandon moved on to industry where he spent a year-and-a-half analyzing soil and water samples at the environmental sample testing company TestAmerica. From there, he moved on to graduate school in the department of chemistry and chemical biology at Indiana University Purdue University at Indianapolis. There he conducted research on paper spray mass spectrometry in the lab of Nicholas Manicke. Over the course of his undergraduate and graduate career, Brandon has been published thirteen times in scientific publications such as the Journal of Physical Chemistry, Bioanalysis, and the Journal of the American Society for Mass Spectrometry. In January of 2020, Brandon joined the product management team at Thermo Fisher Scientific to help support the Thermo Scientific™ Orbitrap ID-X™ Tribrid™ Mass Spectrometer product line.
