Waters Corporation: Take your PFAS Analysis to the Next Level (1) with Advanced MS for Non-Targeted Analysis

Per- and poly-fluorinated substances (PFAS) are synthetic organic compounds widely used in products and processes because of their hydrophobic and non-stick properties. Known as ‘forever chemicals’ due to their persistence in the environment, PFAS are identified as a class of environmental contaminants of high concern. Increasingly, environmental and regulatory agencies are taking action to address PFAS contamination, setting sub-parts-per-billion (ppb) tolerance thresholds to limit exposure and protect public health.

While targeted techniques can detect these compounds at low levels, the number of current targets is limited. Consequently, the use of non-targeted High Resolution Mass Spectrometry (HRMS) is becoming important for the analysis of PFAS. This is due to the rapid rate of detection of novel PFAS in samples and a lack of analytical standards.

Join us for these short two-part series (30 min) to take your PFAS analysis to the next level, where we will demonstrate the benefit of using HRMS workflows for advanced discovery, identification and quantitation of PFAS.

Learn about recent LC developments and how the Xevo™ G3 QTof, and a SELECT SERIES™ Cyclic™ Ion Mobility Spectrometry (IMS) rise to this analytical challenge.

Gain practical insights on workflows used by our scientists for your own PFAS investigations; see the range of inlet options available, how to run samples, experience the latest software for data acquisition and interpretation.

Presenter: Stuart Adams (Consulting Scientist, Testing & Lab Services, Food and Environmental, Waters Corporation)

Stuart started his career by attending the University of Glasgow studying for an honours degree in Food and Environmental Chemistry where his passion for solving analytical challenges started. He furthered his education with a doctorate from the University of Leeds in analytical chemist. Subsequently he spent 17 years working at Fera on a variety of projects looking at the detection of chemicals in challenging food and environmental samples using a variety of detection techniques. Whilst at Fera he has represented the UK at several European Union Reference Laboratory meetings for pesticide analysis and is a recognised international expert in his field. Stuart joined Waters Corporation in 2018 and currently works as a Consulting Scientist where he still loves to work on solving the analytical challenges that matter.

Presenter: Dr. Hania Khoury-Hollins (Principal Scientist, Waters Corporation)

Hania Khoury-Hollins is a scientist and researcher at Waters Corporation. She holds a bachelor’s degree in science, which laid the foundation for her scientific pursuits. In 2001, Hania earned her master’s degree in Toxicology, deepening her understanding of the impact of chemicals on living organisms. In 2005 she successfully defended her Ph.D. in physical chemistry from University René Descartes - Paris V (France). After undertaking several different projects in academia Hania spent some time working at Agilent before joining Waters.

At Waters, her work revolves around developing cutting-edge analytical techniques and their applications with a focus on Liquid Chromatography Coupled with High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry (LC-HRMS). Her expertise encompasses a diverse range of applications, including drug development, proteomics, metabolomics, and lipidomics. More recently, Hania has been developing applications strategies for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).
