Thermo Fisher Scientific: iHUPO 2024 Reloaded Webinar series

The presentations on Orbitrap Astral highlight significant advancements in proteomics and metabolomics. The first presentation from Alexey Chernobrovkin focuses on the integration of high throughput and high sensitivity mass spectrometry, demonstrating how the latest generation of mass spectrometers, coupled with advanced LC systems like the Vanquish Neo, can significantly increase sample The three presentations on proteomics advancements highlight significant technological and methodological innovations. Johan Gobom’s presentation focuses on enhancing glycoproteomics capabilities, showcasing how advancements in technology now allow for high-throughput analysis of up to 1000 samples per day. This enables applications in stem cell glycoproteomics, 3D organoid glycoproteomics, and spatial glycoproteomics, opening new avenues for research and clinical diagnostics.

Sergey Vakhrushev’s talk emphasizes the integration of data-independent acquisition (DIA) methods to improve sensitivity and throughput in proteomics. It highlights the use of advanced sample preparation techniques and optimized mass spectrometry settings to achieve better quantitative results and reproducibility. These advancements collectively push the boundaries of what is possible in proteomic analysis, making large-scale and detailed studies more feasible and accurate.

Finally, Lindsay Pino’s presentation discusses the development of a high-speed, targeted mass spectrometry method using the new Thermo Scientific Stellar MS instrument. This method enables rapid profiling of chromatin-binding proteins and can be adapted for high-throughput screening of various protein panels, facilitating drug discovery and mechanistic studies.

Presenter: Johan Gobom (Clinical Chemist, Göteborgs universitet)

Johan was a graduate student in the Protein Research Group in Odense, Denmark, and worked as a research group leader at the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics in Berlin. He is currently clinical chemist at Sahlgrens University Hospital in Gothenburg, Sweden and associate professor at the Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology at the University of Gothenburg. His research focuses on the use of mass spectrometry based clinical proteomics for the study of neurodegenerative diseases, including explorative proteomics in CSF and blood as well as targeted analysis for biomarker development.

Presenter: Sergey Vakhrushev (Associate Professor, Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine | University of Copenhagen)

Sergey Vakhrushev received his PhD in 2006 from University of Muenster, Physics Department, Germany. Currently he is an Associate Professor at University of Copenhagen. He is P.I. and group leader (GlycoMS group) at the former Copenhagen Center for Glycomics (CCG) => Center for Glycocalyx Research (2025-xx). He is head of Mass Spectrometry and Glycoproteomics group at CCG (=>CGR). His main research angle is fundamental studies in glycobiology, development of mass spectrometry based methods for glycomics and glycoproteomics. Application of DDA and DIA bottom up methods to study N- and O- glycosylation in various biological systems. Focus in clinical developments (congenital disorders and cancer) based on targeted glycoproteomics and GlycoDIA methods. Analytical design to build new class of biopharmaceuticals based on glyco gene editing. Intact and top down MS analysis of glycoproteins and complex mixtures. Strong interest is in programming and infortmatics for glycoproteomics, data interpretation and visualization.

Presenter: Lindsay Pino (Co-founder & Chief Technology Officer, Talus Bio)

Lindsay Pino is the co-founder and chief technology officer at Talus Bio. She has over a decade of experience in analytical chemistry and computational biology and focused on development of technologies for quantitative proteomics. At Talus Bio, her company is focused on the challenges associated with scaling-up quantitative proteomics to enable the pace of consequential drug discovery and development and to provide clarity on the molecular mechanisms of cancer, aging, diabetes, epigenetics or Spatiotemporal proteomics. The mission of Talus Bio is to target high potential but previously ‘undruggable’ transcription factors in their native cellular environment. Talus Bio combines functional proteomics, automated biology and machine learning to target these hard-to-reach TF proteins. Outside of a research, she is a runner, a dog owner and hiker – where she feels most at home in the mountains, particularly the cascade range in the pacific northwest of the United States.
