Why Biphenyl is the new C18

RECORD | Already taken place Tu, 11.3.2025
We'll discuss the retention profile of a variety of C18 columns (because not every C18 is equivalent), and consider the differences between a number of modifications allowed within the L1 class with USP.

Restek Corporation: Why Biphenyl is the new C18
Restek Corporation: Why Biphenyl is the new C18

Development of a new HPLC method has long been standardised within laboratories; you grab a C18 column, run a few test injections, and hopefully you get retention and separation of your analytes. Whilst C18 is a great stationary phase, and is heavily relied upon globally, this webinar offers a new approach to a "generic" stationary phase.

We'll discuss the retention profile of a variety of C18 columns (because not every C18 is equivalent), and consider the differences between a number of modifications allowed within the L1 class with USP. We'll then contrast this against a Biphenyl phase, looking at the various ways this ligand can retain target molecules to reframe your approach to method development, with some tips along the way to ensure you get the most from the phase. We'll also look at some practical examples of the chromatography differences between C18 and biphenyl phases, and discuss why these differences occur.

This webinar will cover:

  • An overview of the retention mechanisms at play with various C18 column types
  • A discussion how biphenyl columns retain, where they differ from C18, and how to benefit from these differences
  • The best practices for successful utilization of biphenyl columns in LC methods
  • Examples of biphenyl chromatography in applied solutions, with contrast against C18 in the same application
