Automating Decisions for High Throughput Applications using Review-by-Exception.

Presenter: Bill Farrell (Senior Scientist, Virscidian Inc.)

William (Bill) Farrell received his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from SUNY Stony Brook. His early career spanned the pharmaceutical development aspects, from quality control, pre-clinical support and discovery, all focused in analytical chemistry. Bill has an affinity for chromatography and mass spectrometry, and is considered an expert in supercritical fluid chromatography. Transitioning from HPLC method development at Bristol Myers Squibb to SFC high throughput purification at Alanex-Agouron-Pfizer, Bill lead one of the first teams to apply SFC to combinatorial libraries and medicinal chemistry, which ultimately led to advancements in SFC columns and instrumentation. In recognition of his extensive work, he was a recipient of the R&D 100 Innovation award in 2002 for development of Preparative SFC, the Green Chemistry Group Averica Award for his contributions to Preparative SFC in 2013 and the American Chemical Society Technical Achievement in Organic Chemistry (TAOC) award in 2017. Bill joined Virscidian in 2024 as Senior Scientist after extensive utilization of Virscidian workflow solutions for purification and high throughput experimentation (HTE) applications as an early adopter and collaborator. He has an extensive background in analytical chemistry applications working on a broad range of enabling technologies, including SFC specific stationary phases, quantitative universal detection (CLND, ELSD, CAD), and automation for high throughput workflows. He has a passion for enabling customers to succeed in their automation processes in the most efficient manner possible and joined Virscidian to see that vision realized. When not working, Bill can be found mountain biking local trails.
