Thermo Fisher Scientific: Technology of the new mass spectrometers
Thermo Fisher Scientific: Technology of the new mass spectrometers

The presentation introduces the latest advancements in mass spectrometry technology, focusing on the Orbitrap Astral Zoom and Orbitrap Excedion Pro Mass Spectrometers. These new instruments offer significant improvements in speed, sensitivity, and resolving power, achieving up to 10 times the signal-to-noise ratio and resolving power compared to previous models. The Orbitrap Astral Zoom features a unique Astral Analyzer, enabling higher throughput and deeper coverage, while the Orbitrap Excedion Pro boasts enhanced sensitivity and dynamic range with advanced electron-based fragmentation techniques.

The presentation highlights the evolution of mass spectrometers from bulky, expensive instruments to the refined, powerful devices of today. Key innovations include the pre-accumulation step, which increases signal gain and duty cycle, and the multi-pass mode, which boosts resolving power. These advancements have led to substantial gains in research output, with the Orbitrap Astral Zoom achieving 10 times the research output of previous instruments. The presentation concludes by emphasizing the versatility and potential of these new mass spectrometers in various applications, from protein analysis to metabolite identification.

Learning points:
  • Enhanced Sensitivity and Speed: The Orbitrap Astral Zoom and Orbitrap Cadian Pro Mass Spectrometers offer up to 10 times the signal-to-noise ratio and resolving power, significantly improving research output and efficiency.
  • Efficient Target Scheduling: The new instruments can handle up to 450 targets with minimal impact on performance, ensuring nearly 100% target recovery rate and robust quantitation.
  • Innovative Pre-Accumulation Step: The introduction of a pre-accumulation step boosts duty cycle and sensitivity, leading to substantial signal improvements and higher throughput in mass spectrometry analysis.
Who should attend:
  • Research Scientists: Professionals involved in proteomics, metabolomics, and other fields requiring advanced mass spectrometry techniques.
  • Laboratory Managers: Individuals responsible for selecting and maintaining high-performance analytical instruments in research facilities.
  • Pharmaceutical and Biotech Professionals: Experts seeking to enhance drug discovery and development processes through improved analytical capabilities.
