Metrohm: Karl Fischer in Action: Moisture Analysis in a High-Throughput Testing Lab

The Karl Fischer (KF) method is a globally trusted technique for determining water content across a wide range of sample types. While the procedure is routine in many labs, chemical testing laboratories face a unique challenge: analyzing an ever-changing array of unknown and complex matrices.

Join us to learn how one of the world’s largest chemical testing laboratories tackles complex moisture analysis. Krystal Heffelfinger, an experienced chemistry technician at Intertek, will share challenges she encounters when analyzing everything from industrial chemicals, adhesives, and lubricants to pharmaceuticals, food ingredients, and personal care products. With such a wide sample scope, each day brings a new moisture determination puzzle.

Eduardo Simões, Titration Product Specialist at Metrohm USA, will demonstrate how KF automation helps streamline workflows, improve consistency, and boost throughput for labs managing high sample volumes.

Stay for the live Q&A session, where Krystal and Eduardo will answer your questions and share practical insights for tackling difficult samples. Attendance will be recognized with a certificate you can add to your professional development portfolio.

This mini course is ideal for:
  • Those interested in learning the fundamentals and nuances of Karl Fischer titration
  • Labs that routinely deal with unknown or complex samples for moisture analysis
  • Teams seeking to improve moisture determination workflows through automation
  • Anyone curious about how the KF Oven technique applies to different sample types
What you'll learn
  • How to choose the right KF technique (volumetric vs. coulometric) for your sample
  • Smart sample prep strategies to boost accuracy and repeatability
  • Tips on selecting the right sample amount and handling procedures
  • How to analyze water in tough matrices — and when to use the KF Oven for better results
  • Where automation can make the biggest impact in high-throughput labs

Presenter: Krystal Heffelfinger (Analyst Technician, Intertek)

Krystal Heffelfinger joins us from the Inorganic Analysis team at Intertek Allentown (PA), bringing valuable expertise in analytical testing. In addition to her broad testing responsibil-ities, she specializes in a range of Metrohm instrumentation and techniques. With two years of hands-on experience, Krystal has focused on method development and analysis using volumetric and coulometric Karl Fischer titration, potentiometric titration, and pH measurement across a variety of sample types and industries. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Forensic Chemistry from Lock Haven University, equipping her with a solid foundation for tackling the complex challenges of unknown sample characterization in third-party testing.

Presenter: Eduardo Simões (Titration Product Specialist, Metrohm USA)

As the Titration Product Specialist at Metrohm USA in Riverview, Florida, Eduardo Simoes, MSc, leverages 22 years of practical experience in potentiometry and electroanalysis. His expertise spans instrument installations, technical support, and training, gained through extensive field work. He holds bachelor's and master's degrees in analytical chemistry from the University of Campinas, Brazil, providing a strong theoretical foundation for his hands-on approach.
