PerkinElmer: PerkinElmer Medical LC-MS/MS Seminar at UToledo

PerkinElmer, a leader in clinical diagnostic innovation, is working in collaboration with Dr. Emanuela Gianfriddo at The University of Toledo. PerkinElmer’s newborn screening technology is known and utilized globally. Today we would like to explore our other LC-MS/MS applications.

Biocompatible Solid-Phase Microextraction and Laminar Flow Tandem Mass Spectrometry

The ultra-trace determination of small organic molecules in complex biospecimens, such as plasma, requires sample preparation/extraction techniques able to pre-concentrate the analytes of interest and minimize matrix co-extractants that can potentially affect the accuracy of the analysis. This webinar presents the development and validation of a new analytical protocol, based on bio-compatible Solid-Phase Microextraction (SPME) and LC-MS/MS to test the bioavailability, adsorption kinetics and metabolic interconversion of nicotine in rabbit plasma after application of smoke cessation formulations.

Detection and quantitation of nine fentanyl analogs in urine and oral fluid using QSight Triple Quad LC-MS/MS

The opioid epidemic has become a serious public health problem in the United States. The increasing abuse of synthetic opioids has raised concerns in the society. With the emergence of fentanyl analogs in the drug market, identifying and differentiating those analogs becomes a challenge due to their structural similarities to fentanyl. The purpose of this research was to develop a method of identifying and quantifying nine fentanyl analogs in urine and oral fluid using the QSight® Triple Quad LC-MS/MS.

MS/MS-based second-tier tests for newborn screening using QSight® MD Triple Quad LC-MS/MS

The continued expansion of newborn screening programs to include additional conditions increases the need to provide testing with the highest sensitivity, specificity and minimizing the false-positive rate. Some assays and analytes are particularly problematic. In order to improve this situation we developed MS/MS-based second-tier tests using the QSight® MD Triple Quad LC-MS/MS to minimize the false-positive rate and increase the specificity of newborn screening.

Presenter: Dr. Emanuela Gionfriddo PhD (Assistant Professor, The University of Toledo)

Dr. Emanuela Gionfriddo is an Assistant Professor of Analytical Chemistry at the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry of The University of Toledo (OH, USA). Research work in Dr. Gionfriddo’s lab focuses on the development of advanced analytical separation tools for the analysis of complex biological and environmental matrices, with emphasis on alternative green sample preparation methodologies. Dr. Gionfriddo has currently authored 30 research articles, 8 reviews, a book chapter, and a patent on PTFE-based SPME coatings. Dr. Gionfriddo is one of the founding members of the Dr. Nina McClelland Laboratory for Water Chemistry and Environmental Analysis at the University of Toledo and she is appointed to the Ohio Attorney General Yost’s EnvironmentalCouncil of Advisors.

Presenter: Sabra Botch-Jones M.S., M.A., D-ABFT-FT (Assistant Professor, Boston University School of Medicine)

Sabra Botch-Jones is a Forensic Toxicologist and Assistant Professor at Boston University School of Medicine’s Biomedical Forensic Sciences graduate program. She is Course Director for Forensic Toxicology, Analysis of Controlled Substances, Forensic Chemistry, Advanced Chemistry and Instrumental Analysis in Forensic Laboratories. Sabra is board certified as a Diplomate by the American Board of Forensic Toxicology. She conducts research in the areas of forensic toxicology, analytical chemistry, as well as seized drug analysis. Sabra has authored and co-authored a number of scientific articles. She serves as Vice Chair and on the Executive Board of the National Safety Council’s Alcohol, Drugs and Impairment Division

Presenter: Dr. Roberto Bozic PhD MBA (SME Applications Leader, PerkinElmer)

Dr. Bozic received his PhD in Pharmaceutical Chemistry from the University of Milan, Italy, where he developed a novel in-vitro model for early assessment of drugs distribution based on artificial membranes and plasma protein binding in Drug Discovery using LC-MS/MS. Since joining PerkinElmer he expanded his mass spectrometry experience in clinical and especially in newborn screening field, where he has held various roles up to lead the newborn screening support team in EMEA. His group was mainly focused in supporting mass spectrometry solutions for newborn screening and Lysosomal Storage Disorders screening. Roberto now leads the Subject Matter Expert group focused on Analytical Science in EMEAI.
