Ion Chromatography as a Tool for Industrial Problem Solving

Ion chromatography (IC) is a valuable tool for Industrial Analytical Chemists as they face many unique challenges, ranging from product quality, new product development, and plant process troubleshooting. Choosing an appropriate, timely, and cost-effective analytical technique is critical to maintaining reliability and meeting sustainability goals.
This talk will highlight three case studies where IC approaches generated critical data for decision making:
- (1) organic acid contamination,
- (2) residual amine in plastic films, and
- (3) water contamination in organic heat transfer fluid.
Presenter: Stephen Fosdick (Research Scientist, Analytical Science, Core R&D, The Dow Chemical Company)
Stephen Fosdick is a member of Analytical Science as part of Dow Core R&D. His expertise is primarily in analytical liquid chromatographic separations (quantitative HPLC and IC) and inorganic characterization (electrochemistry, solution speciation, equilibria). Stephen is also a journeyperson for Dow’s Fundamental Problem-Solving Team. Stephen earned his Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from The University of Texas at Austin in 2014 and his B.S. in Chemistry from Iowa State University in 2009. Stephen joined Dow’s Analytical Science group in 2014 in Freeport, TX.
Presenter: Isaac Negrete (Sr. R&D Technologist Analytical Science, Core R&D, The Dow Chemical Company)
(2023)Isaac Negrete is a member of Analytical Science as part of Dow Core R&D. While working for Dow, he has developed numerous ion, gas, and liquid chromatography methods implemented in manufacturing product quality and R&D labs. He is the global technology network lead for ion chromatography and is involved in many new product support and process improvements. Isaac earned an A.S in applied science from Brazosport College in 2006. Other leadership roles are Safety Action Committee rep for Core, integration coach for new hires, lab owner team. He has been the recipient of the 2022 Global Analytical Network Technologist Award. Isaac joined Dow’s Analytical Science group in 2007 in Freeport, TX.
