Shimadzu: Analysis of Steroid Hormones by LC-MS/MS: Advancing Research in HIV/AIDS and Reproductive Sciences

Steroid hormones are a frequent target of analysis in both basic research and clinical laboratories. LC-MS/MS has become the preferred method of analyzing steroid hormones due to small required sample volumes, ability to multiplex panels of hormones, high throughput, and its improved specificity over immunoassays.

This presentation will focus on ways in which the Endocrine Technologies Core at Oregon National Primate Research Center applies LC-MS/MS analysis of steroid hormones to advancing research in HIV/AIDS, reproductive disorders, and contraception. A description of the methods and some of the challenges presented by LC-MS/MS analysis of steroid hormones will be presented. Supported by NIH P51 OD011092 and NIH S10 OD026701.

Our panel will host a Q&A session after the presentation to address any questions or comments.

Presenter: David Erickson , Ph.D. (Director, Endocrine Technologies Core, Oregon Health & Science University)

Dr. David Erikson is the Director of the Endocrine Technologies Core at Oregon National Primate Research Center. The Core provides essential endocrine assay services and specialized expertise to investigators in order to advance a wide array of research in a number of species, with a focus on nonhuman primates. The Core supports investigators with varied research interests, including reproductive health, nervous system diseases, obesity, and HIV/AIDS. Dr. Erikson has recently published articles in journals such as Contraception, AIDS, and Nature Communications. He earned his Ph.D. from Penn State University and completed postdoctoral training at Texas A&M University and University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Erikson was a research specialist at UCSF before taking his current position as ETC Director at ONPRC.

Presenter: Brian Feild (Sales Specialist - LCMS, Shimadzu)

In the thirteen years Brian Feild has worked at Shimadzu he has worn several hats. Previous to his current position as the LCMS and Life Science Sales Specialist for the Pacific Northwest and Rocky Mountain States, he served as the Life Science Product Manager and also worked in the applications lab specializing in MALDI applications. Before coming to Shimadzu, Brian worked at Celera Genomics using LCMS and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry for target discovery for biotherapeutic and diagnostic development. Brian received his B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Dayton and an M.S. in Biotechnology from Johns Hopkins University.
