<p><strong>Participation in Proficiency Testing (PT) is an important part of assuring the quality of test results in a laboratory. The time and effort required can be costly, especially for laboratories performing many different tests, so selecting the most appropriate PT scheme is very important. Several PT schemes are often available for the same area of testing, so this leaflet focuses on key questions that can help laboratories choose those PT schemes that are best suited for their needs.&nbsp;</strong></p><h4><strong>Parameters included in the PT&nbsp;</strong></h4><p>Are the matrices, analytes, and/or concentration levels of the test items offered by the PT scheme similar to those of samples encountered in the everyday practice of the laboratory? For example:&nbsp;</p><p><strong>Example 1: </strong><i>The levels of contaminants in a PT scheme for drinking water will be quite different from those expected in industrial wastes.&nbsp;</i></p><p>A laboratory testing industrial wastes could:&nbsp;</p><ul><li>Participate, taking into account the limitations;&nbsp;</li><li>Not participate at all.&nbsp;</li></ul><p><strong>Example 2:</strong> <i>PT schemes for sequencing of DNA may offer either tissue samples or DNA extracts.&nbsp;</i></p><p>Depending on its choice, the laboratory’s competence will be assessed for:&nbsp;</p><ul><li>The whole test;&nbsp;</li><li>The sequencing step only.&nbsp;</li></ul><h4><strong>Strategies for data collection and analysis&nbsp;</strong></h4><p>Are the strategies applied by the PT provider suitable for the needs of the laboratory? Factors to be considered include:&nbsp;</p><ul><li>Description of the statistical design applied;&nbsp;</li><li>Number of test items to be analysed and/or number of replicates requested;&nbsp;</li><li>Procedures for data collection from participants (e.g. submission by fax, e-mails or web-portals);&nbsp;</li><li>Procedures for comparison of results obtained by different measurement procedures;&nbsp;</li><li>Number and origin of participants;&nbsp;</li><li>Number of participants using the same measurement procedure as the laboratory; and&nbsp;</li><li>Methods and criteria used for performance assessment.&nbsp;</li></ul><p>The laboratory should also consider whether its customers, accreditation bodies and/or regulatory bodies have any specific requirements on statistical design.&nbsp;</p><p><strong>Example 3:</strong> <i>A laboratory determines the fat content in milk powder, cereals and feed using three operationally defined measurement procedures (Röse Gottlieb, direct fat extraction, and fat determination by hydrolysis). Each measurement procedure could give different results for each matrix. It is important for the laboratory to check whether the different measurement procedures are taken into consideration for each matrix in the PT scheme</i></p><h4><strong>Evaluation of performance&nbsp;</strong></h4><p>Is the method used for assessing the participants’ performance (e.g. z score) clearly described by the PT provider and understood by the laboratory?</p><p><strong>Example 4: </strong><i>A laboratory may be interested in reporting the measurement uncertainty on its PT results so this can be taken into account in the performance evaluation, but the approach of the PT provider does not include this.&nbsp;</i></p><p>Are the criteria used by the PT provider for performance evaluation compatible with the type of work undertaken by the laboratory and/or the relevant legislation?&nbsp;</p><p><strong>Example 5: </strong><i>A laboratory performing confirmatory analyses may look for more restrictive criteria for performance evaluation than laboratories using simpler screening techniques.</i>&nbsp;</p><h4><strong>Trust in the PT provider&nbsp;</strong></h4><p>How can a laboratory assess the competence of a PT provider? Consider:&nbsp;</p><ul><li>Compliance with the requirements of ISO/IEC 17043, e.g. accreditation;&nbsp;</li><li>Experience;&nbsp;</li><li>Reliability of the assigned values; and&nbsp;</li><li>Fitness for purpose of criteria for proficiency assessment.&nbsp;</li></ul><h4><strong>Communication&nbsp;</strong></h4><p>Is the interaction between the PT provider and the participant suitable? Selecting the right proficiency testing scheme for my laboratory

<p><strong>The 44th International Symposium on Capillary Chromatography (ISCC), the premier meeting for pressure and electrodriven microcolumn separations and related techniques, will be held May 17 – 22, 2026 in the Congress Centre, Riva del Garda, Italy.</strong></p><p>The program will include plenary lectures, keynote lectures by young scientists, prominently featured poster presentations, an instrument exhibition displaying the latest instrumental innovations, and a highly attractive social program offering opportunities to meet with world-renown scientists.</p><p>The <strong>21st GCxGC Symposium</strong> will be organized jointly with the ISCC meeting to allow scientists to attend both meetings. The symposium will start with a short course on Sunday May 17 covering the fundamentals and applications of comprehensive GCxGC and with a plenary session on <strong>Monday May 18</strong>. <p>The scientific community aims to enhance transparency and reliability in published research, with a specific focus on the quality of biological reagents, notably recombinant proteins. Concerns have been raised regarding irreproducible results, prompting discussions on common quality issues associated with recombinant proteins and their impact on downstream applications. In response, professionals in protein purification and characterization have collaboratively developed guidelines for improved quality control.</p>
<p>These guidelines include minimal information requirements for protein identity, production parameters, and long-term stability, as well as a minimal set of quality tests for purity, homogeneity, and identity. Additional recommendations cover DNA contamination, “spectral and thermal denaturation signatures”, homogeneity, “competent fraction”, storage conditions, batch-to-batch reproducibility, and other factors based on intended applications. </p>
<p>Evaluation of these guidelines over a one-year period suggests that their implementation can enhance experimental reliability and optimize protein quality. Investing in protein QC benefits all stakeholders in life sciences, including researchers, editors, and funding agencies, by improving data accuracy and minimizing resource wastage</p>

He is best known for his development of terminomic methodology for the identification of protein N and C-termini for the identification of mature and neo-protein substrate termini in vivo. He Chairs the HUPO Chromosome-centric Human Proteome Project (C-HPP), sits on the 1st Council of the pi-Hub Global Proteomics Project, and is the recipient of numerous awards, e.g., CNPN Tony Pawson Award, the Proteomass Scientific Society Award; 2018 HUPO Discovery Award in Proteomics Sciences; and 2022 Helmut Holzer Award.</p>

She completed postdoctoral studies in the laboratory of Prof. James Wells at the University of California, San Francisco. Her research group engineers enzymatic tools for mapping biological signals across space and time in living cells. Using these tools, the lab seeks to provide an integrated view of cellular signaling to advance biological discovery and development of therapeutics for human disease.</p>

<p><strong>The sample throughput of high-sensitivity liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) based proteomics analysis is restricted by the pressure limitations of LC and column hardware, with some methods wasting as much as 50% of the method cycle time outside of MS acquisition.</strong></p>
<p>Traditional routes for boosting throughput include shorter columns and gradients, higher flow rates, and using trap-and-elute workflows – all of which introduce trade-offs in sensitivity and proteome depth.</p>
<p>The Thermo Scientific™ Vanquish™ Neo tandem direct injection workflow leverages hardware innovations and software intelligence to eliminate method overhead while maintaining data quality across nano, capillary, and micro-flow LC-MS.</p>

After a postdoc he directed the mass spectrometry core facility at the Max-Planck-Institute of Biochemistry working on a wide range of protein and peptide mass spectrometry projects such as bottom-up proteomics, structural mass spectrometry including HDX, native and crosslinking MS, intact protein and small molecule analysis.</p>

He holds a Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from Kharkiv National University, Ukraine. During his post-doctoral work at the University of Groningen, The Netherlands, he combined LC-MS and immunoassays to discover and validate protein biomarkers in biofluids for cancer screening. Before joining Research and Early Development at Bayer AG, he developed and introduced new liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry products at Thermo Fisher Scientific. Alexander is a subject matter expert in LC-MS, biological data interpretation, and precision medicine. He utilizes his passion for applying technical expertise to develop new medicines.</p>

<p><strong>Supercritical Fluid Chromatography (SFC), a chromatographic technique using a supercritical CO2 mobile phase, has been known for decades but was seldom used due to the popularity of normal and reverse phase liquid chromatography.</strong></p><p>Several years ago, SFC found a niche in chiral resolution when it was found that the physical characteristics of supercritical fluids can offer unique separations when compared to traditional liquid chromatography methods. Since then, these unique separations and “greener” aspect of CO<sub>2</sub> have sparked new interest broadening SFC applications. Shimadzu, the leader in innovative SFC instrumentation, offers an array of analytical and preparative SFC systems that allow researchers easily access this growing technology. <p><strong>As subcutaneous delivery of high-concentration biologics becomes more popular, optimizing their formulations becomes more complicated. Some</strong><br><strong>excipients play better with one antibody, not another, or only help under specific conditions. Testing formulations at high protein concentration makes lower sample consumption and efficient assays a must-have. High-throughput, low volume solutions, designed for biologics, will speed up those formulation studies.
