The AICAR Analysis is a targeted laboratory test designed to confirm the identity and determine the amount of AICAR in finished lyophilised vials and raw active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) powders.
For finished vials, results are reported in milligrams per vial. Raw API powders can be evaluated using an alternative result format based on purity in % (m/m). AICAR is not a peptide, and peptide purity is therefore not determined as part of this analysis.
AICAR is a small-molecule research compound widely used in studies of cellular energy metabolism and AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) signalling. After cellular uptake, AICAR riboside can be phosphorylated to ZMP, an AMP analogue that can activate AMPK.
AICAR has been investigated extensively in preclinical research examining metabolic regulation, glucose and lipid metabolism, and cellular responses to changes in energy availability. Its effects are not exclusively mediated through AMPK, and additional AMPK-independent mechanisms have also been described.
Important Notice
- AICAR is not a peptide. Peptide purity is therefore not measured as part of this analysis.
- For finished products, one whole unopened vial containing lyophilisate is required.
- Raw API powder should be supplied as at least 30 mg in a sealed glass vial to minimise moisture absorption.
