The workshop is dedicated to all multidimensional techniques.

Patrik Petersson is a Principal Scientist at Ferring Pharmaceuticals in Copenhagen, Denmark. He has been working within the pharmaceutical industry with the development of analytical separation methods for 29 years within research as well as all phases of development.  During the time within industry the link to the academia has been maintained through collaborations, teaching and supervision of MSc/PhD students.  This has resulted in 71 publications and 31 oral presentations at national/international conferences.  The majority related to chromatography but also capillary electrophoresis and modelling/chemometrics.

Pascal Cardinael obtained his Ph.D. degree in Analytical Chemistry in 2000 from the University of Rouen (France). In 2002, he became a Lecturer at the Laboratory of Separative Methods and Sciences UR3333 at the University of Rouen Normandy, and was appointed Professor of Analytical Chemistry in 2011. He has been managing the Laboratory since 2022. The Laboratory focuses on the development of new stationary phases and miniaturized columns for Gas Chromatography and High Performance Liquid Chromatography for space exploration missions and on-site monitoring. All practical and fundamental aspects of comprehensive two-dimensional Gas Chromatography are also studied, including miniaturization, modulator technology, retention modeling, and coupling with high-resolution mass spectrometry.

Thomas Dutriez obtained his Ph.D. degree in Analytical Chemistry in 2010 from the University of Paris (France) and IFP Energies nouvelles. He then continued his career as a scientist in gas chromatography and mass spectrometry at DSM (Netherlands), during which his work on comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography was awarded by the John B. Phillips award in 2013. In 2014, he joined Givaudan International (Switzerland) to establish the analytical laboratory dedicated to quantifying regulated substances in fragrance ingredients. Currently, he leads the Product Safety Sciences Laboratories at Givaudan International, a center of Excellence dedicated to conducting regulatory analytical and environmental studies at a global level to address the growing regulatory requirements.

Comprehensive gas chromatography (GC×GC) is a common technique used in government and industrial laboratories; however, it has struggled to gain widespread acceptance due to perceived complexity and a lack of standardized and validated methods. Furthermore, the technique is not directly comparable to historical data sets and previously used analytical techniques. Overcoming these challenges and limitations in non-academic laboratories is a critical aspect of research by experts and advanced GC×GC users. Advanced users must be vocal advocates, highlighting the advantages of GC×GC in cases where the additional separation data can be advantageous. By addressing the benefits and limitations of this technique, this discussion will aim to address how we may elevate GC×GC in industrial and government laboratories, including, but not limited to, the role of obtaining employment in these sectors, allowing for further integration into the GC×GC community.

<h5>Certified and indicative values and their uncertainties:</h5>
The certified and indicative values for each cannabinoid are given in Table 1. The overall averages of the received laboratory values were assigned the status of certified and indicative values when the following criteria were met: a certified value was derived from at least five received data sets, an indicative value from at least three received data sets. The combined uncertainties listed are dominated by the contribution of uncertainty in the characterisation of the relevant property value. The certification study was conducted at international level in the form of an inter-laboratory comparison, with the participation of laboratories with quality assured testing in the field of cannabinoid analysis.

The CRM will be monitored for its shelf life. If there are significant changes to the reported values, Analytika, Ltd. will notify the purchaser.
<h5>Storage and instructions for use:</h5>
The CRM must be kept and stored in its original packaging at a temperature below -12 °C. The material should be analysed as delivered and should be tempered to 20 °C and rehomogenised by mechanical shaking of the contents before taking an aliquot for analysis. At low temperatures, a solid fraction may be excluded, which will dissolve again on re-extempering. In order to ensure sufficient homogeneity, the recommended minimum weight for analysis is 50 mg.

Matrix certified oil reference material for cannabinoid content

Fertilizers manufactured from the sludgy leftovers of wastewater treatment processes can contain traces of potentially hazardous organic chemicals, according to a new study by Johns Hopkins University researchers.The research, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.est.4c02934">published today in journal Environmental Science &amp; Technology</a>, provides one of the most comprehensive looks at the chemical composition of so-called biosolids across the country and is the first step toward identifying common chemical contaminants that may need government regulation. The findings could help the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency prioritize which organic compounds to investigate further, the researchers said."We've been relatively in the dark when it comes to possible organic hazards in biosolids, and we need to know if there are any smoking guns that we're unaware of," said <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://engineering.jhu.edu/faculty/carsten-prasse/">Carsten Prasse</a>, an assistant professor in the Department of Environmental Health and Engineering who studies environmental contaminants. "Regulators need to know what these types of fertilizers are made of to determine how they can be responsibly used."<blockquote>"We've been relatively in the dark when it comes to possible organic hazards in biosolids, and we need to know if there are any smoking guns that we're unaware of."<h5> - Carsten Prasse</h5>Assistant professor, Whiting School</blockquote>Using analytical chemistry techniques capable of identifying thousands of chemicals, Prasse and his team screened 16 samples of biosolids from wastewater treatment facilities in nine U.S. and three Canadian cities. Samples contained traces of pharmaceuticals, industrial chemicals, and a variety of fragrances. Among them were bisphenol A (BPA), commonly found in plastics, and carbamazepine, a drug used to treat epilepsy and bipolar disorder."Because there are so many compounds in biosolids, the question we had was how do we triage? How do we find the chemicals that are widespread and could potentially be problematic, that the EPA and other scientists would need to investigate before proposing regulations," Prasse said.The researchers then created lists of the chemicals found in each sample and compared them to compounds that popped up in multiple places across the country. The dashboard helped the team identify which chemicals were most likely to pose threats to human health or the environment."We're not saying that these compounds pose a risk right now, because we haven't done a formal risk assessment," said <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://pure.johnshopkins.edu/en/persons/matthew-newmeyer">Matthew Newmeyer</a>, a research associate at the Bloomberg School of Public Health and first author on the paper. "We're saying that these have a potential to be problematic and we need more information in order to make sure these biosolids are safe."Using biosolids can be beneficial, the researchers said. They are rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, and other nutrients that help plants grow. They require less energy to make than synthetic alternatives. And wastewater facilities can sell biosolids to generate revenue to offset treatment costs and reduce waste sent to landfills or incinerators.More than half of the 3.76 million tons of biosolids produced in the United States in 2022 fertilized agricultural lands, golf courses, and other landscaped areas, according to the EPA. While direct contact with biosolids is likely limited to occupational exposures, the broader population could be exposed to contaminants absorbed by crops grown in such fertilizers, the researchers said.The team plans to measure the identified compounds in the biosolids and vegetables grown in biosolid-amended soil to determine if their concentration levels warrant concern. The researchers are also investigating risks to farmers, landscapers, and composters who work with biosolids.Authors include: Keeve Nachman and Qinfan Lyu of Johns Hopkins University, and Jon Sobus and Antony Williams of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.This research was supported by U.S. EPA grant R840247 and U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention grant T42 OH0008428.

Spectral data, together with chromatograms, add a third dimension to analytical data analysis. This extension expands the capability of <a href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/products/999">Clarity</a> by providing interactive spectral analysis, peak purity analysis and compound identification that is based on a spectral library search. PDA data can be displayed in a set of optional views including 3D rendering.
All data is saved in a single file; a chromatogram at any wavelength or even only a spectrum can simply be recalled for review after an analysis. UV-VIS spectra, acquired using a PDA detector, may be interactively selected from a chromatogram signal for visual inspection and comparison. The spectra may also be used for peak purity determinations, wavelength optimization and component identification through spectral libraries.

The Clarity MS Extension is a tool that is used for processing data that has been acquired from selected Mass Spectrometry detectors. Spectral data, together with chromatograms, add a third dimension to analytical data analysis.
The MS Extension expands the capability of <a href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/products/999">Clarity</a> and <a href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/products/1000">Clarity Offline</a> Chromatography software by providing interactive spectral analysis, peak purity analysis, and compound identification that is based on a spectral <a href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/products?category=249">library</a> search. The extension is prepared to function with single quadrupole MS detectors and TOF MS detectors.
All data is saved in a single file; a chromatogram at any m/z value or even only a spectrum can simply be recalled for review after an analysis. MS spectra, acquired using an MS detector, may be interactively selected from a chromatogram signal for visual inspection and comparison. The spectra may also be used for peak purity determinations and component identification through spectral <a href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/products?category=285">libraries</a>.
It is possible to import MS data in AIA (cdf), mzXML, MzML, and mzData formats.
Control modules for selected detectors (see <a href="https://www.dataapex.com/controls">list of control modules</a>) are available in Clarity. Additional control modules for MS detectors can be developed upon request.
