Highlights of ESAS-CSSC Brno 2022 1. Conference Overview The joint 29th European Symposium on Analytical Spectrometry and 17th Czech-Slovak Spectroscopic Conference (ESAS-CSSC) brought together advances in spectroscopic and mass-spectrometric methods for environmental, biomedical, materials, and geoscience applications. 2. Chiral and Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy • New label-free SERS and TERS strategies enabled differentiation of enantiomers via charge-transfer (CT) mechanisms and tip-induced chiral electric fields. (PL1, PL2) • Applications included monitoring plasmon-catalyzed decarboxylation of Ru(II) complexes and drug–cell interactions. 3. Mass Spectrometry Innovations • Triple-quadrupole ICP-MS (TQe) with O₂ and He gases provided improved interference removal versus single-quad instruments. (OL9) • Single-particle and single-cell ICP-MS methods were developed to quantify metal ions and engineered nanoparticles in biological and environmental models. (IL3, OL8) • High-resolution continuum-source GF-AAS and novel CVG setups expanded ultratrace detection of nonmetals (fluorine, phosphorus, selenium) and metals (Zn, Cd, Hg). (IL6, OL15) 4. Infrared-Based Nanospectroscopy • AFM-IR and SNOM-FTIR achieved sub-100 nm spatial resolution for probing protein aggregates, lipid membranes, and chemical composition of nanomaterials, such as titania-gold films. (IL1, OL21–OL22) • Drop-Coating Deposition Raman (DCDR) on nanostructured hydrophobic substrates allowed ultrasensitive detection of liposomal formulations and contaminants. (IL1, MP4) 5. Laser Analytical Techniques • Laser Ablation-ICP-MS 2D/3D imaging captured elemental distributions in biological tissues (Alzheimer’s oligomers, cancer cell studies, plant uptake) and geological and archeological samples. (OL46, OL49, OL50, OL53) • LIBS-acoustic fusion provided simultaneous chemical and surface-mechanical characterization, including Brno lunar regolith analogs and brake wear particles. (TP1, MP27) 6. Speciation and Sample Preparation • New on-line DBD CVG atomizers for AAS offered in situ preconcentration of hydride-forming elements (As, Se, Cd) without chemical reagents. (OL18, MP39) • Advanced DES-VA-LLME and other green extraction techniques combined with ICP-OES/MS achieved low-ng g⁻¹ detection of selenium, antimony, iodine, and rare earths in food, soils, and geological samples. (OL16, MP14–MP16, MP20, TP3) 7. Emerging Optics and Mössbauer • Tunable metasurfaces and frequency-domain PECD extended quantum optics to UV/VUV. (IL18, IL14) • Nanoscale Mössbauer and Raman CD spectroscopy unraveled iron biomineral phases in algae, magnetic biomaterials, and new foldamers. (IL2, OL20, OL45) International participation and multidisciplinary approaches underscored current trends toward label-free, nanoscale, and element-specific imaging and quantification, paving the way for next-generation analytical spectrometry.
