Recognition by independent experts highlights the technology’s high level of market readiness, which is exceptional even in the context of other outstanding projects supported by the European Innovation Council,” said <strong>Jiří Navrátil, Technology Transfer Coordinator at CATRIN</strong>.</p><p>The nitrogen-enriched graphene electrode material, based on graphene—a two-dimensional material consisting of a single layer of carbon atoms—was developed by researchers in Olomouc seven years ago. It originated from <strong>Michal Otyepka’s</strong> prestigious European Research Council project focused on the <strong>2D chemistry of fluorographene</strong>.</p><p>In the following years, researchers demonstrated the material’s significant potential for electrical energy storage, particularly in supercapacitors, which represent a promising alternative to today’s widely used lithium-ion batteries. Development of prototype supercapacitors with unique properties began under the prestigious European Innovation Council project <strong>TRANS2DCHEM</strong>, in collaboration with partners from<strong> Bar-Ilan University in Israel</strong> and the<strong> Italian company ITELCOND</strong>. The next logical step was the establishment of the spin-off company <strong>Atomiver</strong>, which has been operating since 2024.</p><p>“The continuous growth in global energy consumption and the rapid expansion of electronic devices are driving strong demand for high-performance, stable energy storage components. Our electrode material is unique because it pushes the current limits of commercially available technologies, particularly in terms of volumetric energy density—the amount of electrical energy that can be stored within a given volume. Compared with existing technologies, our material enables several-fold higher energy density. Its inclusion in the Innovation Radar database encourages us to continue developing the technology and bring it closer to commercial production,” said <strong>Michal Otyepka</strong>, one of the inventors of the technology and co-owner of the spin-out company.</p><p>The material is protected by <strong>several international patents</strong>, which have been licensed by Atomiver from Palacký University.</p><p>“Supercapacitors incorporating our graphene material could one day help ensure the safe operation of large data centres, Internet of Things (IoT) networks, transport systems, grid-scale energy storage, electronics for space applications and implantable medical devices,” added<strong> Veronika Šedajová</strong>, one of the inventors of the technology.</p><p>The significance of the technology was previously recognised when Atomiver was selected for the<strong> NATO DIANA </strong>accelerator programme, one of only<strong> 74 companies chosen from more than 2,600 applicants</strong>. The company has also received support from CzechInvest through its Technology Incubation programme.</p><p>“We are currently in intensive discussions with investors, who have shown strong interest in the technology, not least because the electrode material we have developed also has considerable potential for applications in other industries,” said<strong> Andrew Hladký, Director of Atomiver</strong>.</p><p><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://innovation-radar.ec.europa.eu/innovation/66621"><strong>Innovation Radar</strong></a> serves as a platform for investors, entrepreneurs and the wider public to discover emerging technologies.</p>

<h3><strong>HPLC Detection Technologies: A Practical Overview</strong></h3><p><strong>High-performance liquid chromatography is a cornerstone of modern analytical chemistry. It is routinely applied in pharmaceutical quality control, biopharmaceutical development, environmental monitoring, food analysis, and polymer characterization. However, separating the components of a sample is only one part of the analytical process. The compounds leaving the column must also be recognized and converted into a signal that can be evaluated.</strong></p><p>This is the task of the HPLC detector. Its selection can strongly influence the sensitivity, selectivity, reliability, and overall usefulness of a chromatographic method.</p><p>In the first article of our HPLC detector series, we introduce the principal detection technologies, explain how they differ, and outline the factors that should be considered when selecting a detector for a particular application.</p><h4><strong>What Does an HPLC Detector Do?</strong></h4><p>After compounds have been separated inside the chromatographic column, they enter the detector one after another. The detector continuously monitors the column effluent and responds to a physical or chemical property of each analyte.</p><p>This response is converted into an electrical signal and displayed as a chromatogram. The position of a peak provides information related to retention time, while its height or area can be used to determine the amount of the corresponding compound.</p><p>A detector must therefore provide more than a visible signal. It should generate data that are sufficiently sensitive, stable, reproducible, and suitable for the purpose of the analytical method.</p><p>Several characteristics are particularly important when comparing detector technologies:</p><ul><li><strong>Sensitivity:</strong> The lowest amount or concentration that can be detected or reliably quantified.</li><li><strong>Selectivity:</strong> The ability to respond preferentially to certain compounds while minimizing signals from other sample components.</li><li><strong>Linearity and working range:</strong> The concentration interval over which detector response remains proportional to analyte concentration.</li><li><strong>Mobile-phase compatibility:</strong> The detector must function correctly with the selected solvents, additives, gradients, flow rates, and temperatures.</li><li><strong>Information content:</strong> Some detectors provide only a quantitative response, while others also deliver spectral or structural information.</li><li><strong>Practical requirements:</strong> Instrument cost, maintenance, method complexity, and operator experience must also be considered.</li></ul><p>There is consequently no single detector that is ideal for every separation. Their response may therefore be highly selective, but only analytes possessing the relevant property can be measured.</p><h5><strong>Bulk-property detection</strong></h5><p>Bulk-property detectors monitor a change in a general physical property of the mobile phase as an analyte passes through the detector. Refractive index is a common example. Because many compounds can produce such a change, these detectors offer broad applicability, although they are often less sensitive and more dependent on stable operating conditions.</p><h5><strong>Hyphenated detection techniques</strong></h5><p>In hyphenated systems, HPLC is connected to another analytical technology capable of generating additional information. Liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry is the best-known example. Optical Detectors</strong></h4><p>Optical detection is the most established and widely used approach in routine liquid chromatography. These detectors evaluate how an analyte absorbs, emits, rotates, or otherwise interacts with light.</p><h5><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/products?category=175&amp;manufacturerItems=503"><strong>UV/VIS</strong></a><strong>, </strong><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/products?category=177&amp;manufacturerItems=503"><strong>DAD, and PDA detectors</strong></a></h5><p>UV/VIS absorbance detectors measure the reduction in light intensity caused by an analyte at a selected wavelength. They are especially suitable for compounds containing chromophores, which are molecular structures capable of absorbing ultraviolet or visible light.</p><p>Diode-array and photodiode-array detectors record absorbance across a broader wavelength range. In addition to quantitative detection, they can provide spectral information that assists with wavelength selection, peak comparison, and the assessment of chromatographic purity.</p><p>UV-based detectors are popular because they are robust, relatively easy to operate, and compatible with a wide range of routine HPLC applications.</p><h5><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/products?category=297&amp;manufacturerItems=503"><strong>Fluorescence detectors</strong></a></h5><p>Fluorescence detection measures light emitted by a compound after excitation at a specific wavelength. It can provide excellent sensitivity and selectivity when an analyte is naturally fluorescent.</p><p>Compounds without native fluorescence may sometimes be converted into fluorescent derivatives before or after separation. This extends the range of applications but introduces an additional sample-preparation or reaction step.</p><p>Fluorescence detection is frequently used for pharmaceutical compounds, environmental contaminants, biological molecules, and other analytes requiring sensitive measurement in complex samples.</p><h5><strong>Optical rotation and circular dichroism detectors</strong></h5><p>These detectors evaluate the interaction of optically active compounds with polarized light. They are particularly valuable in chiral separations, where the objective is to distinguish between enantiomers and evaluate enantiomeric purity.</p><p>Their application is more specialized than conventional UV detection, but they can provide information that cannot be obtained from a standard absorbance signal alone.</p><h4><strong>2. Aerosol and Light-Scattering Detectors</strong></h4><p>Some analytes do not absorb UV light strongly enough for reliable absorbance detection. Aerosol-based and light-scattering technologies provide alternatives for many nonvolatile compounds.</p><h5><strong>Evaporative light-scattering detection</strong></h5><p>In an evaporative light-scattering detector, the column effluent is nebulized and the volatile mobile phase is removed. The remaining analyte particles pass through a light beam, and the scattered light is measured.</p><p>ELSD can therefore detect many compounds that lack chromophores, including certain lipids, carbohydrates, surfactants, and polymers. The analyte must generally be less volatile than the mobile phase.</p><h5><strong>Charged aerosol detection</strong></h5><p>Charged aerosol detection also begins with nebulization and evaporation of the mobile phase. The resulting analyte particles are then electrically charged, and the charge is measured to generate the detector response.</p><p>CAD offers broad applicability for nonvolatile and semi-volatile analytes and is frequently considered when UV detection is unavailable or produces an insufficient response.</p><h5><strong>Multi-angle light scattering</strong></h5><p>Multi-angle light-scattering detectors measure light scattered at several angles. When combined with suitable chromatographic and concentration data, MALS can support the characterization of molecular size and absolute molar mass.</p><p>This capability is particularly valuable in polymer analysis, protein characterization, and size-exclusion chromatography.</p><h4><strong>3. Mass Spectrometric Detection</strong></h4><p>Mass spectrometry is among the most informative detection technologies available for liquid chromatography. Instead of responding only to absorbance or another general property, an MS detector measures ions according to their mass-to-charge ratio.</p><p>LC–MS can provide:</p><ul><li>High sensitivity for trace-level analysis</li><li>Strong selectivity in complex sample matrices</li><li>Molecular-mass information</li><li>Fragmentation data supporting compound identification</li><li>Qualitative and quantitative results within a single workflow</li></ul><p>Mass spectrometry is not universal in the strictest sense because the analyte must be successfully ionized. The mobile phase and its additives must also be compatible with the ion source.</p><p>Despite these requirements, LC–MS has become indispensable in pharmaceutical research, clinical and bioanalytical testing, food safety, environmental analysis, metabolomics, and many other fields. Its main disadvantages are higher acquisition costs, greater method complexity, and more demanding maintenance and data interpretation.</p><h4><strong>4. Electrochemical Detectors</strong></h4><p>Electrochemical detectors measure electrical changes associated with oxidation or reduction reactions at an electrode surface. They are suitable for compounds that are electrochemically active under the selected conditions.</p><p>Typical applications include the analysis of:</p><ul><li>Neurotransmitters</li><li>Catecholamines</li><li>Vitamins</li><li>Phenolic compounds</li><li>Redox-active pharmaceutical substances</li></ul><p>For suitable analytes, electrochemical detection can achieve very high sensitivity and selectivity. At the same time, reliable operation requires carefully controlled mobile-phase composition, clean solvents, stable electrode conditions, and thorough method optimization.</p><p>The technique is therefore extremely powerful for targeted applications but less broadly applicable than UV or mass spectrometric detection.</p><h4><strong>5. Bulk-Property and Specialized Detectors</strong></h4><h5><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/products/2429"><strong>Refractive index detectors</strong></a></h5><p>A refractive index detector compares the refractive index of the mobile phase with that of the mobile phase containing an eluting analyte. Because many compounds alter this property, RID can be used for substances that do not absorb UV light.</p><p>Common applications include sugars, alcohols, lipids, and polymers. Refractive index detection is relatively straightforward, but it generally provides lower sensitivity than UV or fluorescence detection. It is also highly sensitive to changes in temperature and mobile-phase composition, making it poorly suited to gradient elution.</p><h5><strong>Viscosity and pH detectors</strong></h5><p>Viscosity detectors monitor changes in the flow characteristics of the mobile phase, while pH detectors respond to changes in acidity or alkalinity. These technologies are less common in general-purpose HPLC but can be useful in specific analytical or characterization workflows.</p><h5><strong>Radioactivity detectors</strong></h5><p>Radioactivity detectors are used when compounds contain radioactive labels. They are particularly important in tracer studies, metabolism research, drug development, and nuclear medicine.</p><p>Their selectivity is determined by the radioactive signal, allowing labelled compounds and their products to be followed even in complex matrices.</p><h4><strong>Selecting the Most Appropriate Detector</strong></h4><p>The detector should be selected according to the analytical question rather than according to a single performance specification.</p><p>For routine analysis of compounds with suitable chromophores, UV or diode-array detection is often the most practical solution. Fluorescence or electrochemical detection may be preferable when very high sensitivity is required for compounds with the appropriate chemical properties.</p><p>ELSD and CAD are useful for nonvolatile analytes that exhibit weak or no UV absorption. Refractive index detection remains valuable for relatively concentrated samples analyzed under isocratic conditions. When molecular identification, structural confirmation, or highly selective trace analysis is required, mass spectrometry is usually the strongest option.</p><p>In more complex workflows, several detectors may be connected in sequence. Its popularity is due to the positive impact it has on anode cyclability and reduction of irreversible capacity. Small amounts of moisture in Li-ion batteries can significantly decrease performance and lifetime. Therefore, moisture levels in electrolyte solutions and their additives are controlled for use in manufacturing. Until recent years, accurate moisture quantification in vinylene carbonate samples was difficult due to side reactions. With the commercial development of alcohol-free coulometric Karl Fischer reagents, accurate determination is now much more accessible to end-users.</p><h4><strong>EXPERIMENTAL</strong></h4><p>This analysis was performed using an <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=220&amp;search=852+titrando"><strong>852 Titrando</strong></a> (2.852.0060) instrument, equipped with the electrodes listed in Table 1.</p><h4><strong>CONCLUSION&nbsp;</strong></h4><p>During battery manufacturing, control of all moisture present is important to guarantee adequate performance in the finished product. More easily quantifying the moisture contribution from additives such as vinylene carbonate makes this a much simpler task. The introduction of alcohol-free Karl Fischer reagents accomplishes this effectively, allowing the generation of accurate and repeatable moisture data—even for a difficult sample matrix.</p><h3><strong>3. Quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (QTOFMS), with its accurate-mass capability, is well suited for this purpose. However, the large volume of generated data creates challenges for feature identification and data comparison.&nbsp;</p><p>This article presents a case study in which LabSolutions Insight Profiler, a software platform for non-targeted analysis, was used to characterize compounds in beer and beer-like beverages. Peak detection, retention-time alignment, and library searching were performed across multiple datasets. Multivariate analysisrevealed compound profiles that likely reflect the differences in raw materials and manufacturing processes, demonstrating the utility of the approach for beverage characterization.</p><h4><strong>LabSolutions Insight Profiler&nbsp;</strong></h4><p><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=LabSolutions+Insight+Profiler"><strong>LabSolutions Insight Profiler </strong></a>is software for batch processing of LC-QTOFMS data that enables non-targeted analysis through an intuitive workflow. It readily supports easy spectral feature detection, alignment, statistical processing, filtering, list screening, MS/MS spectra-based library searching, principal component analysis (PCA), displaying volcano or box plots, and more. Fig. 1 shows the data analysis workflow.</p><h4><strong>Analysis Conditions&nbsp;</strong></h4><p><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=nexera+X3"><strong>Nexera X3 UHPLC</strong></a> and<strong> </strong><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=9030"><strong>LCMS-9030 systems</strong></a> were used as the analytical instruments. The LC method included in the LC/MS/MS Method Package for Primary Metabolites was used as the method. The data-dependent acquisition (DDA) mode was used to simultaneously acquire precursor m/z and MS/MS data. Table 2 shows the analysis conditions.</p><h4><strong>Conclusion&nbsp;</strong></h4><p>In this study, compounds in various beer and beer-like beverages were analyzed by non-targeted analysis using an LCMS-9030 quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometer system. Analyzing compounds characteristic of each sample with LabSolutions Insight Profiler software confirmed that the resulting profiles reflected differences in raw materials and manufacturing methods.&nbsp;</p><p>LabSolutions Insight Profiler enables efficient non-targeted analysis by processing LC-QTOFMS data with an intuitive workflow. This workflow allows for objective evaluation of the taste, quality, and nutritional value of food products. Furthermore, this method is applicable not only to the analysis of compounds in beverages but also to non-targeted analysis of other types of samples.</p><h3><strong>4. Thermo Fisher Scientific / ASMS: High throughput targeted proteomic workflows with Adaptive Retention Time on the </strong><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/products/1959"><strong>Orbitrap Astral Zoom MS</strong></a></h3><ul><li>Poster</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/po_004699_lsms_art_astral_zoom_proteomics_po004699_asms2026_na_en_78767efdc9.pdf"><strong>Full PDF for download</strong></a></li></ul><p>Advances in MS instrumentation have accelerated the identification of biomarkers, but validating and translating these discoveries into assays for clinical use remains challenging and typically requires robust and accurate targeted approaches. While these often rely on predetermined reference target retention time (RT) windows, analytical column degradation or replacement, aging solvents, sample matrix effects, etc. can cause peptide RT shifts between injections and across longer-term analyses. To accommodate this, targeted MS experiments generally schedule wide target RT windows (&gt;1 min) or rely on heavy labeled peptides to trigger acquisition of endogenous peptides. Both greatly limit the number of quantifiable targets per assay. To overcome this, we utilize adaptive RT (aRT) alignment for live correction of RTs together with the speed and sensitivity of the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/products/1959"><strong>Orbitrap Astral Zoom MS</strong></a>. This allows reproducible tracking of &gt;2000 targets with narrow RT windows, high throughputs, such as 300 samples per day (SPD), and hybrid workflows combining targeting, of up to 1000 targets, and discovery.</p><h4><strong>Materials and methods&nbsp;</strong></h4><h5><strong>LC-MS Experiments&nbsp;</strong></h5><p>Experiments were performed using Thermo Scientific Pierce HeLa protein digest resuspended in 0.1% TFA, or individual or pooled human plasma samples. Peptides were separated using a 15 cm Thermo Scientific PepMap analytical columns (150 µm inner diameter) and the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/products/398"><strong>Thermo Scientific Vanquish Neo UHPLC system</strong></a> at throughputs of 60 or 300 SPD. The liquid chromatography (LC) system was interfaced with the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/products/1959"><strong>Orbitrap Astral Zoom MS.</strong></a> Reference runs using MS1 and/or data-independent-acquisition (DIA) scans were acquired to obtain reference aRT spectra, and to determine target RTs. For aRT alignment, methods consisting of aRT MS1 and/or DIA scans, as well as targeted MS2 scans with RT correction were optimized. For hybrid DIA workflows, we used aRT MS1 scans for reference acquisition and alignment, combined with narrow window DIA and a targeted MS2 experiment. Observed RT shifts were caused by natural column degradation, sample matrix effects or when indicated induced by variation in gradient flow rate and buffer composition.&nbsp;</p><h5><strong>Data analysis&nbsp;</strong></h5><p>Reference DIA data was analyzed using Spectronaut. Targets lists were then generated from the search output by selecting varying number of targets evenly distributed across the RT dimension. Target RTs for smaller scale assays were manually validated and exported from Skyline, while target RTs for large scale assays were exported from Spectronaut. For alignment runs, DIA and PRM data were analyzed using Spectronaut and Skyline respectively.</p><h4><strong>Conclusions&nbsp;</strong></h4><ul><li>Adaptive RT alignment on Orbitrap Astral Zoom MS shows robustness against various sources of RT shifts and has high target recovery even for thousands of targets&nbsp;</li><li>aRT enables the use of target acquisition windows &lt;15 s for robust targeting at high throughput&nbsp;</li><li>aRT Hybrid DIA allows targeting of up to 1000 targets with minimal cost to DIA depth</li></ul><h3><strong>5. Waters Corporation / ASMS: BOOSTING SENSITIVITY IN TOP-DOWN PROTEIN STUDIES USING CYCLIC IMS-ENABLED WIDEBAND ENHANCEMENT</strong></h3><ul><li>Poster</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/720009471_51f2e8b546.pdf"><strong>Full PDF for download</strong></a></li></ul><div><div><section><div><div><div><div><div><div><p>The poster evaluates <strong>Wideband Enhancement (WBE)</strong> as a way to improve sensitivity in top-down protein mass spectrometry. In top-down workflows, intact proteins are fragmented directly, but the signal is distributed across multiple charge states, isotope envelopes, and numerous product ions, which can limit MS/MS sensitivity. WBE addresses this problem by synchronizing ion packets leaving the ion mobility region with the time-of-flight pusher, thereby increasing the number of ions that reach the detector within a selected <i>m/z</i> range.</p><p>Experiments were performed using a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/products/2434"><strong>Waters Cyclic IMS P20 Mass Spectrometer</strong></a> equipped with an <strong>electron capture dissociation cell</strong>. Samples were introduced by direct infusion in positive electrospray ionization mode. Two proteins were studied under denaturing conditions: bovine ubiquitin, approximately 8.5 kDa, and bovine carbonic anhydrase II, approximately 29 kDa. Single-pass and bypass ion mobility measurements were carried out with and without WBE, using both <strong>collision-induced dissociation (CID)</strong> and <strong>electron capture dissociation (ECD)</strong>. Data were acquired in <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/products/635"><strong>MassLynx</strong></a><strong> v4.2</strong> and processed using <strong>DriftScope</strong> and the <strong>waters_connect UNIFI peptide-mapping workflow</strong>.</p><p>For ubiquitin, WBE substantially increased the intensity of CID- and ECD-derived fragment ions. Improvements of up to tenfold were observed across the c- and z-ion series, while bypass ion mobility mode produced the largest overall sensitivity gain. The results indicate that WBE can enhance fragment detection while retaining the benefits of cyclic ion mobility separation and without sacrificing mass-spectral resolution.</p><p>The larger carbonic anhydrase II protein also showed marked improvements. CID fragment signals increased by up to tenfold for lower-<i>m/z</i> ions and about eightfold for higher-<i>m/z</i> fragments. Because ECD is generally less efficient than CID, the benefit of WBE was especially evident in ECD experiments: sequence coverage increased from <strong>54% without WBE to 70% with WBE</strong> in bypass mode. The authors conclude that combining WBE with complementary CID and ECD fragmentation on the Cyclic IMS P20 enables more sensitive and comprehensive top-down protein characterization.</p></div></div></div></div></div></div></section></div></div>
