High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and ultra-high performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) are indispensable techniques across pharmaceuticals, biochemistry, food safety, and environmental testing. An LC system consists of pumps, autosamplers, columns, detectors, and thermostats – each designed to deliver precise flow rates, reproducible injections, and stable detection.

Like all precision instruments, HPLC systems face wear and tear. Mechanical stress, high pressure, solvent exposure, and continuous operation gradually degrade critical parts.

Which Parts Break Down Most Often and Why?

  • Pumps and valves: Solvent contact and pressure cycling cause seals, pistons, and valves to wear over time, leading to leaks or unstable flow.
  • Autosamplers: Moving parts such as syringe motors, turret motors, and thermostats can fail after thousands of injection cycles.
  • Detectors (UV, RID, FLD): Optical units, lamps, and flow cells degrade with time and exposure, reducing sensitivity and stability.
  • Electronics and boards: Mainboards, flow sensors, and temperature controllers ensure precise operation, but age-related failures may occur.

What Needs to Be Replaced Frequently?

  • Pump seals, pistons, frits, and valves – regular maintenance items due to solvent and pressure stress.
  • Autosampler consumables such as syringe assemblies, motor belts, and needles.
