My name is James Little and my private consulting company is Mass Spec Interpretation Services. I contract for NIST, Wiley, and Sapec. Previously, I was a Research Fellow specializing in mass spectrometry at Eastman Chemical Company in Kingsport, TN and retired in early 2016 after &gt;37 years of service. For 2017-2019, I did NMR as a limited service employee specializing in end group determinations for Eastman.
My main interest is the identification of organic compounds by mass spectrometry in organic mixtures. All the technical information on my web page was approved as technical session handouts, conference presentations, workshops, journal publications, courses, etc. for distribution outside Eastman. Other postings on this site are my own and do not necessarily represent Eastman’s positions, strategies or opinions. I also include a “little” information about my sailing experiences.
In 2017, I purchased a used Model S85 Tesla and starting to participate in electric vehicle events. In addition, I am a member of the choir at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, play competitive duplicate bridge, and race sailboats on Watauga Lake.

I am a graduate of the University of Chemistry and Technology in Pardubice in the department of analytical chemistry. I have been involved in chromatography since the beginning of my professional career. For the last 26 years, I was working for Waters Corporation in the service department until my departure in 2023. As a service technician, I gained experience in laboratories all over the Czech Republic. Thanks to many years of experience, I can also offer knowledge from older instrumentation, whose official support has already ended. In addition to basic services, I can provide maintenance of chromatography systems, their confirmation and qualification.
<h3>Service support of Waters HPLC a LCMS</h3>
<h4>1. On-site Service of HPLC and LC/MS</h4>

<h4>2. Performance Maintenance of HPLC and LC/MS</h4>
The condition evaluation of the chromatography system by performing targeted tests. Proposal for partial or complete maintenance according to the manufacturer&#39;s recommendations. Performed tests after maintenance.
<h4>3. HPLC and LC/MS systems confirmation, calibration</h4>
At the beginning is basic testing of the individual modules of the chromatography system. After that, if necessary or according to request, the maintenance is performed. The required parameters are calibrated. This is followed by tests verifying the basic characteristics of the accuracy and reproducibility of the system and is evalueted as to whether they meet the specification. Certified chemicals and calibrated tools are used to confirm the system.
<h4>4. Installation and commissioning of older HPLC and LC/MS systems</h4>
In the case of older used chromatographic instruments, their condition is evaluated. If necessary, then their repair, maintenance, or addition of missing components will be proposed. Confirmatory tests including accuracy and reproducibility evaluation characteristics are used for verification. After complete installation and documentation of test results, operator training is carried out. This can be followed by the preparation of the system for targeted application and, in cooperation with application support, the development and optimization of the chromatographic method.
<h4>5. HPLC and LC/MS systems qualification</h4>
To successfully complete all qualification tests, the system must be in good condition. Therefore, at the beginning, its condition is verified by evaluating its condition since the last maintenance. The maintenance and other tests are performed, such as pressure tests, checking the sensitivity of the detectors, MS charging test, etc. If necessary or according to a previous order, repair/maintenance is performed. During the qualification process, all the necessary parameters are verified, which are then evaluated.
Both the parameters of individual modules (OQ) and the entire system are qualified. Certified chemicals and calibrated tools are used for the system qualification. The customer supplies only the mobile phase.

Education in the field of separation science is carried out through scientific seminars, workshops, practical training, and scientific conferences. Since 2008, the Czech Chromatographic School has organized seven scientific conferences which were well attended by both academics and by members of the industry. The last two conference events attracted more than 150 participants.
Furthermore, the Czech Chromatographic School cooperates with a wide spectrum of vendors in the form of scientific seminars and training. The most successful event is a regular two-day practical training in HPLC in collaboration with Pragolab.
