<p> The Academy employs over 8,000 employees, more than a half of whom are researchers with university degrees.</p>
<p>The primary mission of the CAS and its institutes is to conduct research in a broad spectrum of the natural, technical and social sciences and the humanities. This research, whether highly specialised or interdisciplinary in nature, aims to advance developments in scientific knowledge at the international level, while also taking into account the specific needs of both the Czech society and the national culture. Researchers of the Academy institutes also participate in education, particularly through doctoral study programmes for young researchers and by teaching at universities as well. The Academy also fosters collaboration with applied research and industry. The integration of the Czech science into the international context is being promoted by means of numerous joint international research projects and through the exchange of scientists with counterpart institutions abroad. The CAS is financed primarily from the state budget. </p>
<p>The CAS has also been assigned financial responsibility for 71 specialised Czech scientific societies associated with the Council of Scientific Societies.</p>

<p>Chemical research continues in the tradition of such distinguished Czech chemists as Rudolf Brdička, Jaroslav Heyrovský, František Šorm, and Otto Wichterle. In physical chemistry, theoretical as well as experimental, research is oriented toward the selected fields of chemical physics, electrochemistry, and catalysis. Inorganic chemistry is directed at the preparation and characterisation of new compounds and materials, such as boranes. Research in organic chemistry and biochemistry focuses on medicine, biology, and ecology, seeking to synthesise new potential medicaments, especially anti-virals. Macromolecular chemistry involves developing, preparing, and characterising new polymers for use in biomedicine, such as those for contact lenses and the separation of compounds. Analytical chemistry is also directed at separation techniques, but on a microscale in capillaries and in spectral methods. Thermodynamics and phase behaviour of fluids, dynamics of multiple phase reacting systems, homo- and heterogeneous catalysis, and modern separation methods are studied in the domain of chemical engineering science.</p>

<p>The aim of research in this section is to increase knowledge about processes in living organisms, from the molecular and cellular levels to the whole organism. Biophysical research is oriented toward studies of DNA – protein interaction and the effect of environmental factors on organisms. In molecular genetics and cell biology, signalling pathways which trigger target reactions and the responses of the target genes to these signals are investigated; special attention is paid to cell mechanisms of immune responses. Studies of microbial genomes and processes lead to modern technologies for preparing metabolites with defined biological effects. Research in mammalian and human physiology and pathophysiology is centered on cardiovascular physiology, neurosciences, physiology of reproduction, and embryology, aimed at creating theoretical bases of preventive medicine. In entomology, insects are studied both as common pests, but also as model objects, as in the case of the silk moth. Research in experimental botany is oriented toward genetics, physiology, and pathophysiology, as well as modern plant biotechnologies.</p>

<p>Research in this section is concentrated on interactions between organisms and environment, and also between organisms. Studies involve earth ecosystems, water ecosystems, and parasite-host systems. Investigations are carried out mostly on the territory of the Czech Republic, and contribute to the bio-ecological mapping of the country. Long-term observations focus on typical ecosystems in selected localities studied from the point of view of geobotany, hydrobiology, soil biology, chemistry and microbiology, and on the eutrophization of selected lakes and dams. Taxonomy of higher and lower plants, especially of algae, is investigated and the information is used by conservationists. The Institute of Botany oversees the care of Průhonice Park, an important part of Czech natural and cultural heritage.</p>

The Czech Academy of Sciences (CAS) was established by Act No. 283/1992 Coll. as the Czech successor of the former Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. It is set up as a complex of 54 public research institutions.

RECETOX - Research Centre for Toxic Compounds in the Environment

<h3><strong>About RECETOX</strong></h3>
<p>Founded in 1983,  RECETOX is an independent department of Masaryk University’s Faculty of Science. We are engaged in research and education in the fields of environmental and health. Our main activities comprise of monitoring toxic compounds in the environment, various products and human tissues, and evaluating the risks they pose, as well as their associated toxicological and ecotoxicological health effects; developing new sampling and analytical methods; developing new chemical tools and methodologies, biotechnologies and software tools. We are equipt to rapidly respond to new challenges concerning environmental contamination monitoring and exposure of the population to toxic compounds and their mixtures, and propose preventive and legislative measures, and offer appropriate interventions for chemicals management. </p>
<p>We work closely with various industrial partners to safeguard human health and ecosystems from the effects of toxic compounds,. Furthermore, through hosting of the National Center for Toxic Compounds, and the Stockholm Convention Regional Center (SCRC) for capacity building and transfer of technology, we support countries in Europe and Africa, as well as international institutions in the region. </p>
<p>RECETOX’s Research Infrastructure, is a centralized facility for the implementation of interdisciplinary research projects, and is divided into individual core facilities that analyze a wide range of anthropogenic natural substances and toxins in environmental or biological matrices, conduct long-term environmental and population studies, and develop sophisticated software tools for management, analysis, interpretation, and visualization of data. </p>
<p>RECETOX provides multidisciplinary education in bachelor&#39;s, master&#39;s, and doctoral degree programs in the fields of environmental health, mathematical biology, and biomedicine.</p>

<p>We study the relationships between chemicals, the environment, biological systems, and human health, and monitor their impacts at local, regional, and global levels. </p>
<p>Research is carried out by 19 research groups in five research programs.</p>
<h5><strong>Research Agenda</strong></h5>
<p>RECETOX studies the behavior of contaminants and models their long-distance transport and bioaccumulation in living organisms; this includes evaluating the effects of toxic substances on the environment and health, and developing methods and tools to break them down.</p>
<h5><strong>Interdisciplinary Approach</strong></h5>
<p>Our extensive expertise enables us to explore the complex relationships between contaminated ecosystems and population health, biodiversity, and climate change, assess their local and regional impacts, and develop water and soil remediation technologies and tools.</p>
<h5><strong>Environment and Health</strong></h5>
<p>In recent years, the Center&#39;s research focus has expanded to cover the various factors affecting human health and well-being, the so-called exposome, chemical safety, and the development of biotechnology, materials, and bioinformatics tools for biomedicine.</p>
<h4><strong>Our motivation</strong></h4>
<p>Due to the growing number of older adults and the resulting increase in the burden of chronic diseases and societal demands, most developed countries face long-term rises in healthcare costs and thus pressure on health insurance systems. This increase makes chronic diseases, together with health inequalities, two of the most challenging problems of the 21st century. To effectively address these problems, the factors that determine the health of humans and entire populations must be clarified and explored. </p>
<p>Individuals and populations are exposed to many environmental factors, such as heat, noise, light pollution, and a wide range of chemicals and their mixtures. These chemicals enter the body via the food and water we ingest, products we use daily (e.g., cosmetics), the air we breathe, and the indoor environments (buildings, offices) we work or live in. While many of these chemicals have been shown to interfere with the proper functioning of the endocrine and immune systems, causing neurodevelopmental, metabolic, and reproductive disorders, the combined effects of toxic mixtures and other environmental factors, which can also be influenced by stress, socioeconomic determinants, lifestyle or dietary habits, have not yet been fully elucidated.</p>
<p>Therefore, we aim to build research capacity for investigating the exposure of populations to the environmental factors (so-called Exposome) mentioned above, estimate internal exposure and individual susceptibility, predict the risks to human health, and thereby contribute to clarifying the etiology of chronic conditions. </p>

<li>The research programme focuses on understanding the mechanisms and processes affecting the emissions and fate of chemicals in the environment and further expands its interest in study of the exposure of individuals and populations to the environment in order to provide tools for common interpretation of data from environmental monitoring and human biomonitoring networks.</li>

<h5><strong>Environmental health</strong></h5>
<ul>
<li>The new research program deals with biomarkers of exposure, effect and sensitivity of individual organisms, and other factors such as socio-economic determinants of health, nutrition or physical activity. In this context, we are strengthening technology capabilities for omics analyses, biobanking capacities and developing a bioinformatics platform to support the interpretation of multi-omics and epidemiological data.</li>
</ul>
<h5><strong>Environmental Toxicology</strong></h5>
<ul>
<li>Programme focuses on the environmental impacts of both acute and chronic chemical exposures. We use the Adverse Outcome Pathway (AOP) combining modeling and testing strategies to predict the environmental impacts of complex chemical mixtures. We investigate combined exposures to various factors that, based on individual susceptibility, can significantly contribute to an individual&#39;s excessive burden and lead to the development of pathologies.</li>

<h5><strong>Chemical Tools for Diagnostics and Therapy</strong></h5>

<li>The programme focuses on the development of new photoactivatable systems and supramolecular carriers as specific systems that exhibit specific biological activities or serve as auxiliary systems for biological or medical applications.</li>

<h5><strong>Loschmidt laboratories of Protein Engineering</strong></h5>
<ul>
<li>The research programme has been dealing with the basic principles of enzymatic catalysis and development of protein and cellular biocatalysts for environmental, chemical and biomedical applications. The program uses protein engineering, synthetic biology and analysis of large data stored in genomic databases to develop and prepare useful catalysts.</li>

The list does not cover the whole range of services.</h5><h4><strong>Measuring the quality of air as specified by Act No. 201/2012 Coll., Air Protection Act</strong></h4><p>We measure the concentrations of the following pollutants in the atmosphere, as listed in Act No. 201/2012 Coll., authorized by the Ministry of the Environment: nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, tropospheric ozone, benzene, solid particles PM10 and PM2.5, arsen, cadmium, nickel, lead and benzo[a]pyrene. Measuring other pollutants may be added.</p><p>We can use air quality measuring principles in other locations, for example in city parks. Air quality information may help you to plan, develop and maintain these important green spaces in cities.</p><h4><strong>Assessment of environmental contamination</strong></h4><p>We offer complex evaluation of environmental contamination at a specifical location, as well as individual elements of the environment. We use our own laboratories, equipped with top instruments, for taking environmental samples and their processing and preparation for chemical and toxicological analyses. Everything is done using a devicce developed by the Transport Research Centre and the company SEKO spol. s r.o.</p><h4><strong>The issues of fuels and lubricants</strong></h4><ul><li>Specification of the interpretation of emission measuring results,</li><li>Substantiation of the anomalies in emission characteristics of vehicles,</li><li>Influence on the emission factors of vehicles,</li><li>Specification of inputs for emissions modelling (AP development scenario),</li><li>The impact of alternative fuels on the degradation of motor oil,</li><li>Analysis of the technical condition of vehicles based on motor oil.</li></ul><h4><strong>Traffic-caused emissions balance calculations</strong></h4><p>Our services involve balancing emissions of mobile sources from road traffic (including emissions of solid pollutants from abrasions and VOC emissions from evaporation from the fuel systems of petrol vehicles), railway, air and water traffic, as well as emissions from off-road sources (agricultural, forrest and construction vehicles, military vehicles, plant care etc.).</p><h4><strong>Modelling traffic emissions and the contribution of traffic to imission concentrations</strong></h4><p>The offer involves modelling the flow of emissions from traffic at a specific location and the creation of dispersion studies (modelling the contribution of traffic to the imission concentrations). The input for these modellings is a multi-modal traffic figure. If the client does not have a traffic model available, its creation may be a part of the offer.</p><h4><strong>Modelling the traffic imission concentrations (dispersion study)</strong></h4><p>We conduct the calculation of imission concentrations for both gaseous and solid pollutants from traffic in accordance with the SYMOS'97 directive. Primarily, when substances are evaluated, the limits of which are given by the Air Protection Act No. 201/2012 Coll. BIOCEV: Biotechnology and Biomedicine Centre of the Academy of Sciences and Charles University in Vestec

<h3><strong>Excellent Science in Favour of Modern Society</strong></h3>
<p>BIOCEV is a joint project of six institutes of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic (Institute of Molecular Genetics, Institute of Biotechnology, Institute of Microbiology, Institute of Physiology, Institute of Experimental Medicine, and Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry) and two faculties of Charles University in Prague (Faculty of Science and 1st Faculty of Medicine). The project’s goal is to establish European Centre of Excellence in biomedicine and biotechnology.</p>
<p>In January 2016, the Institute of Biotechnology CAS (IBT) moved to a BIOCEV centre and is involved in two of the five research programmes. IBT wants to take full advantage of this chance to produce cutting-edge scientific results that will be transferred into clinical practice.</p>

<p><strong>The Institute for Nanomaterials, Advanced Technologies and Innovations of the Technical University of Liberec, also known as CXI TUL, was founded in 2009. Our mission is to support TUL's long-term vision of collaboration with industry and innovation. Our experts use state-of-the-art equipment and cutting-edge technology to deliver science at the highest level. We focus on three main research areas: nanomaterials in life sciences, competitive engineering and systems integration.</strong></p><p>CXI TUL prides itself on its applied research, which often takes place in close <strong>collaboration with industrial partners</strong>. These collaborations <strong>account for more than 20% of our annual turnover</strong>. Our team includes more than <strong>160 specialists</strong> working on approximately <strong>70 scientific projects</strong>, with nearly one-sixth of our staff coming from all over the world.</p><p>We have been successful in winning major <strong>European grants</strong> such as <strong>Horizon Europe</strong>, <strong>Digital Europe</strong>, <strong>MSCA</strong>, <strong>Life+</strong> and <strong>Twinning</strong>. <p><strong>Founded in 2011 on the basis of six major Brno universities and research institutions. CEITEC&#39;s main priorities are to maintain a motivating and dynamic international scientific environment, to provide a modern research infrastructure that meets the highest standards, and a policy of open communication and equal opportunities not only now but also in the future.</strong></p>
<h3><strong>Central European Institute of Technology – Masaryk University (CEITEC MU)</strong></h3>
<p> is an independent university institute, which was established at Masaryk University as part of the CEITEC - CEO Center of Excellence. CEITEC MU forms a key part of the state-of-the-art edge research infrastructure, that was built in 2014 at the University Campus in Brno-Bohunice and provides top equipment and optimal conditions for basic and applied research, especially in the field of life sciences. The head of CEITEC MU is Pavel Plevka, Ph.D.</p>
<p>The main priorities of CEITEC are the international dimension of research cooperation and its interdisciplinary character. The connecting element between scientific disciplines is mainly the shared laboratories, which create optimal conditions for solving multidisciplinary questions in the fields of structural biology, genomics and proteomics, molecular medicine, neuroscience, nanotechnology and microtechnology. </p>
<h3><strong>CEITEC Brno University of Technology</strong></h3>
<p>It is part of the CEITEC Centre of Scientific Excellence. Since 2011, it has been a key part of a top research infrastructure with unique equipment and conditions for basic and applied research in the field of advanced nanotechnologies and advanced materials and cybernetics.</p>
<p>There are a total of three areas of research at CEITEC BUT. Our main priorities include not only international research cooperation, but also its interdisciplinary nature. CEITEC Nano shared laboratories operate in an open access mode and provide ideal conditions for solving multidisciplinary issues, as their equipment can also be used by external users, institutions or industry partners. The head of CEITEC BUT is prof. Radimír Vrba.</p>
<p>The 18 research groups currently involved deal with ceramic, advanced polymer, bioelectric, low-dimensional or epitaxial materials, as well as biomaterials. Within the development of new materials, we also have research groups interested in materials characterization and advanced instrumentation per se, and even the development of advanced coatings directly for industry. Researchers at CEITEC BUT are working on the preparation and characterization of nanostructures, molecular nanostructures, nanomagnetism and spintronics or magneto-optical ThZ spectroscopy. They also excel in research on future energies, plasma technologies or experimental biophotonics. Our research focus is also extended to include developments in cybernetics and robotics. </p>
<h3><strong>Central European Institute of Technology - Mendel University in Brno (CEITEC MENDELU)</strong></h3>
<p>is an independent institute at Mendel University which was established within the framework of the CEITEC - Central European Institute of Technology. CEITEC includes the leading Brno universities and two research institutes which joined forces in order to establish a centre of scientific excellence. Director of the CEITEC MENDELU is Mgr.Jan Zouhar, PhD.</p>
<p>Mendel University in Brno is the oldest independent university of agriculture and forestry in the Czech lands. It was established in 1919 as the University of Agriculture in Brno and existed under this name until 1994. Its establishment was the culmination of a long-standing effort to establish an agricultural college in Moravia, which has always been one of the countries with the most advanced agriculture in Central Europe. <h3><strong>Central European Institute of Technology - University of Veterinary and Pharmaceutical Sciences Brno (CEITEC VETUNI)</strong></h3>
<p>It is an independent higher education institute established at the Veterinary and Pharmaceutical University as part of the scientific centre of excellence CEITEC - Central European Institute of Technology. CEITEC is an inter-university centre in which four major Brno universities and two research institutes based in Brno cooperate. The Director of CEITEC, VETUNI Brno is Prof. MVDr. Jiří Smola, CSc.</p>
<p>The University of Veterinary and Pharmaceutical Sciences Brno was founded as the College of Veterinary Medicine in December 1918, at that time as the first new university of the Czechoslovak state. In its conception and organisation of teaching, it followed the College of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna. The school consists of three faculties, which in total comprise 28 institutes and 6 clinics.</p>
<h3><strong>Central European Institute of Technology - Institute of Physics of Materials of the Czech Academy of Sciences (CEITEC IPM)</strong></h3>
<p>It is an independent department established at the Institute of Physics of Materials of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic as a part of the scientific centre of excellence CEITEC - Central European Institute of Technology. <p>The activities of CEITEC IPM are focused on the interdisciplinary field of materials science. The focus of its activity lies mainly in basic research of metallic materials. The institute focuses on the physical nature of processes occurring in metallic materials during creep, fatigue and the interaction of creep with fatigue and other types of mechanical loading and on research of the structure and selected physical properties of materials. In both these research areas, the aim is to clarify the relationship between the behaviour and properties of materials and their structural and microstructural characteristics.</p>

<p>The Research Institute of Veterinary Medicine was founded in 1955 by decision of the Minister of Agriculture as an institute of the then Czechoslovak Academy of Agricultural Sciences. It is the only professional research institute in the Czech Republic focused on research in the field of veterinary medicine with a significant share of applied research. <p><strong>The Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry of the Czech Academy of Sciences (IOCB Prague) is a leading scientific institution in the Czech Republic, recognized internationally. <p><strong>Successful basic research and modern structure</strong></p>
<p>The quality of IOCB science is regularly and rigorously assessed by an international advisory board comprised of respected authorities from research institutes and universities around the world. IOCB has pioneered a progressive system of junior groups with talented scientists from different countries hired in an open international competition, during which they demonstrate their unique expertise and submit scientific proposals. Every five years, all research groups undergo a complex evaluation that strictly adheres to transparent rules based on scientific merit.</p>
<p><strong>Medicinal chemistry and drug development</strong></p>
<p>IOCB has always been active and successful in applied research and practical applications, particularly in medicinal chemistry. The tradition started in 1969 with an ointment called Dermazulen, which was followed by the development of several human peptide hormones and their analogues (lysin-vasopressin, oxytocin).</p>
<p>From a global perspective, the most significant contributions were acyclic nucleotide phosphonate antivirals (especially tenofovir as a component of Truvada, Atripla, and other anti-HIV and anti-HBV drugs) discovered by Prof. Antonín Holý at IOCB and later developed and marketed by Gilead Sciences, Inc.</p>
<p>Besides this well-known antiviral drug story, several other nucleoside compounds developed at IOCB became approved drugs. These include Decitabine, which is used in the treatment of acute myeloid leukemia, Azacytidine, which targets myelodysplastic syndrome (both discovered by Holý’s peer Dr. Alois Pískala), and 9-(2,3-dihydroxypropyl)adenine (DHPA), an acyclic nucleoside analogue discovered by Holý and used clinically in anti-herpes ointments.</p>

<p>The unique collaboration between IOCB Prague and Gilead Sciences, Inc. dates back to the 1990s. A partnership program called Gilead Sciences Research Centre at IOCB Prague was established in 2006 for an initial period of five years with an annual donation of $1.1 million to expand IOCB efforts in the field of human disease research. The program was renewed in 2011 and again in 2016 with increased annual funding of $1.35 million.</p>
