<h4>2nd Annual International NETPHARM Conference: From Cutting-Edge Equipment to Excellent Results at the Midpoint of the Project</h4>On 15–16 April 2026, the second annual international conference of the project “New Technologies for Translational Research in Pharmaceutical Sciences” (NETPHARM) took place in Kudowa-Zdrój, Poland. The meeting, attended by more than 100 researchers, confirmed that after two years of implementation the project is successfully fulfilling its ambitious goals in linking basic research with clinical practice.<img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/Mgr_Martina_Kopecka_Jurcekova_Prof_Petr_Pavek_8db8f7e5f2.jpg" alt="Mgr. Prof. Kateřina Vávrová presented on pharmaceutical and analytical chemistry (RO1), while progress in pharmacology and toxicology (RO2) was summarized by Prof. František Štaud. Prof. Martin Hrubý presented results in the field of novel drug delivery systems and formulations (RO3), and Assoc. Prof. Daniela Fialová (RO4) introduced research in geriatric clinical pharmacy focused on systematic literature reviews, algorithms for individualized pharmacotherapy, and pilot deprescribing interventions. Evaluation of activities in advanced in vitro and in silico approaches in drug development (RO5) was presented by Assoc. Prof. Tomáš Smutný. Schug" srcset="https://storage.googleapis.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/thumbnail_Mgr_Martina_Kopecka_Jurcekova_prof_Kevin_A_Schug_b31db2c431.jpg 234w," sizes="100vw" width="1200" height="800"><h4>Key results: 110 publications and investment in infrastructure</h4>The NETPHARM project, funded by the Jan Amos Komenský Operational Programme (OP JAK), achieved significant milestones by early 2026:<ul><li>Interdisciplinary expert team: More than 200 researchers, both experienced and early-career scientists, have been involved in research activities within the project.</li><li>Publications: 110 scientific publications have been produced, the majority of which fall into the Q1 category.</li><li>Dissemination and outreach: The number of contributions at international conferences (195) already exceeds the original plan by 38%.</li><li>Infrastructure: 16 state-of-the-art instruments have been acquired for research laboratories, with a total value of CZK 37.5 million, including an X-ray diffractometer, confocal microscopy, and a computational server.</li><li>Audit: An on-site inspection by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports was successfully completed, confirming the efficient use of grant funds.</li></ul><h4>Strategic recommendations for the future</h4>The conference was followed on 17 April by the 3rd meeting of the ISAB, held in the historic premises of the Carolinum in Prague. The ISAB appreciated the dynamic collaboration among institutions such as Charles University (Faculty of Pharmacy and Faculty of Medicine in Hradec Králové), the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/companies/11">University of Chemistry and Technology in Prague</a>, institutes of the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/companies/10">Czech Academy of Sciences</a> (<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/companies/62">IOCB Prague</a> and IMC), and <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/companies/12">Masaryk University</a>/<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/companies/36">CEITEC</a>. Among the awardees were Ing. Anna Tvrdá, Mgr. Successful HPLC method development depends not only on selecting the correct column and optimizing the mobile phase composition, but also on choosing the appropriate detector. Even a perfectly optimized chromatographic separation provides little value if the detection system cannot properly capture and interpret the analytes of interest.In many ways, the detector acts as the “vision system” of the chromatograph. It converts separated compounds into measurable electronic signals, allowing analysts to identify components and determine their concentrations. The choice of detector therefore has a major impact on sensitivity, selectivity, robustness, and the overall quality of analytical data.This article provides an overview of the most common HPLC detection techniques, discusses their strengths and limitations, and outlines the most important criteria to consider when selecting a detector for a specific analytical task.<h3>HPLC Detection Technologies</h3>HPLC detectors are typically divided into two major categories:<ol><li>Specific detectors (solute-property detectors)</li><li>Bulk property detectors</li></ol>Specific detectors respond to a particular chemical or physical property of the analyte. Since the 1940’s the global use of per and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) in the production of commodities ranging from fire-fighting foams through to textiles has been extensive. The chemical backbone of PFAS comprises of strong carbon-fluorine bonds, making them resistant to chemical and biological degradation which in turn has led to ubiquitous PFAS contamination in the environment. PFAS are now known to be toxic to man and wildlife thus mandating their control and monitoring across the globe. Whilst the initial focus for PFAS analysis has been primarily on environmental samples such as water and soil, there is a growing interest in quantifying their presence in the food chain.
In April 2023 the European commission published regulation EU 2023/915 of maximum levels of certain contaminants in foodstuffs, describing maximum levels of 4 PFAS components. 
In collaboration with Ducares B.V., Trading as Triskelion, and Agilent Technologies, an end-to-end workflow for the quantitation of 21 PFAS in chicken eggs by <a href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/library?instrumentationItems=32&amp;mainauthorItems=10">LC/MS/MS</a> is described. The workflow combines proprietary <a href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=QuEChERS+">QuEChERS</a> and <a href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=solid+phase+extraction">solid phase extraction</a> sample preparation chemistries to reduce chemical interferences from cholesterol, lipids, and proteins. The entire workflow performance was successfully evaluated according to the SANTE 11312/2021 guideline based on sensitivity, limit of quantification, linearity, recovery, and repeatability and has been extended to 17 PFAS beyond the requirements of the current EU legislation.

Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) are produced through the fermentation of non-digestible carbohydrates by the intestinal microbiota. Besides their role in energy homeostasis, SCFAs have also been shown to have signaling roles in the host through the inhibition of histone deacetylases (HDACs) and the activation of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs). We will describe a sensitive and robust gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) method to measure SCFAs using negative chemical ionization (nCI). The method includes automated off-line derivatization using pentafluorobenzyl bromide (PFBBr) and is performed on a GERSTEL MultiPurpose Sampler (MPS). We will highlight how the use of internal standards and calibration standard curves enables the precise quantitation of SCFAs and who GERSTEL automation solutions have significantly enhanced the throughput and reproducibility of our workflow.

The analysis of lipids and lipophilic small molecules with conventional pipette-based robotics systems is challenging due to the aggressive organic solvents needed extract and solubilize these species. In this presentation, the application of an automated workstation to hybrid workflows for lipids and stress hormones will be demonstrated. The first workflow in support of an epigenetics program stemmed from limited samples of placental tissue. The second workflow presented was developed in support of a project examining chronic stress response as exhibited in hair cortisol.

EPA 1633 establishes a method for the determination of 40 PFAS from challenging matrices such as non-potable waters, soils, biosolids, and tissue. For these matrix types, sample preparation has moved beyond the use of a WAX cartridge alone. GCB has been added to the sample preparation workflow to provide additional sample cleanup. We will discuss the full EPA 1633 workflow, including topics such as background analysis for soils and water, MDLs achieved, observed recovery in authentic samples, and the practical advantages of dual-phase cartridges in reducing manual labor steps compared to loose GCB in EPA 1633.

Untapped Ultrashort-chain PFAS Analysis Combined with Routine PFAS Analysis in a Single LC-MS/MS Run

Starting from measuring C8 many decades ago, today’s PFAS testing requires a lot more chromatography capabilities when an extended list of PFAS analysis is desired. Chain length ranging from C1 to C18 and a functional group changing from carboxylic acids to ethers, sulfonamides, and more, with multiple oxygens in the structure, can be challenging for a chromatograph all in one run. In this presentation, we will see examples of a combined PFAS panel analyzed in one run with chain length from C1 and above, in addition to AFFF and FTS compounds.
