<div>Mulching films used in agriculture gradually break down and can become a significant source of microplastics in soils. A new study shows that these particles affect not only soil structure but also microbial life and nitrogen cycling.“We wanted to understand how microplastics from both conventional and biodegradable mulching films influence soil properties, microbial diversity and functions in real conditions,” explains Klára Šmídová, the study’s co-author . “That’s why we added realistic amounts of microplastics to soils in experimental plots in Finland, Germany, and Spain, monitored them over two growing seasons, and compared them with the control plots.”The results revealed that microplastics alter soil characteristics and microbial communities, although not always in the same way. “ However, a consistent finding was the decline in microbial activity associated with key processes, including nitrogen cycling, with negative effects increasing at higher microplastic concentrations and becoming more pronounced in the second year,” Šmídová adds. Because the microplastic levels used in the study reflect amounts already found in European soils, the findings highlight real risks to soil health. “We also found that the effects were stronger in southern than in northern Europe, likely due to differences in climate and soil conditions. This means that protecting soils from plastic pollution will require region-specific risk assessments,” she says.Over 60% of European soils are estimated to be unhealthy, with ongoing degradation driven by unsustainable land use, contamination, climate change, and extreme weather events. In response, the EU Parliament adopted the Soil Monitoring Law in October 2025, aiming to achieve healthy soils across Europe by 2050. “The law highlights the role of soil health in food security, water quality, and climate objectives, and establishes consistent soil monitoring across Member States. It includes measures to support farmers and foresters, while also creating a public list of potentially contaminated sites and an indicative watch list of emerging soil contaminants,” explains Klára Šmídová.The project brought together 19 research groups across Europe. “After each season, hundreds of samples were colle cted and sent to partners for analysis. This paper focuses on soil properties, microbial diversity, and greenhouse gas emissions. Two more manuscripts—on plastic additives and microplastic fate, and on soil invertebrates—are in preparation. This study investigates the effects of agricultural MPs from conventional (linear low-density polyethylene, PE) and biodegradable (starch-blended polybutylene adipate co-terephthalate, PBAT-BD) mulching films on soil physicochemical properties, aggregation, microbial diversity and functions, litter decomposition, and greenhouse gases emissions (GHG). For this purpose, MPs were mixed into soils at realistic MP concentrations of 0.005&nbsp;% and 0.05&nbsp;% (w/w) in 2022 on experimental plots in three EU countries representing different pedoclimatic conditions (Finland, Germany and Spain), followed by monitoring of the above-mentioned variables in the subsequent growing seasons 2022 and 2023. We found several significant MP-induced effects for soil properties, aggregation, microbial diversity, litter decomposition, and GHG, but the effect endpoints were less pronounced or varied considerably. Contrarily, microbial activity, contributing to soil functions such as nitrogen cycling, was consistently reduced by both conventional and biodegradable MPs. The reductions were more pronounced after the second season and for the higher MP treatment. As the higher MP concentration (i.e., 0.05&nbsp;% w/w) is environmentally relevant in Europe, our findings emphasize the potential effects of environmentally relevant MP concentrations on soil health. Per- and poly-fluorinated substances (PFAS) are synthetic organic compounds widely used in products and processes because of their hydrophobic and non-stick properties. Known as ‘forever chemicals’ due to their persistence in the environment, PFAS are identified as a class of environmental contaminants of high concern. Increasingly, environmental and regulatory agencies are taking action to address PFAS contamination, setting sub-parts-per-billion (ppb) tolerance thresholds to limit exposure and protect public health.
While targeted techniques can detect these compounds at low levels, the number of current targets is limited. Consequently, the use of non-targeted High Resolution Mass Spectrometry (HRMS) is becoming important for the analysis of PFAS. This is due to the rapid rate of detection of novel PFAS in samples and a lack of analytical standards.

Drug testing can be performed in many biological matrices, such as urine, blood, saliva, sweat, hair and nail. Although urine and blood testing are the most common forms of drug testing, the use of keratinized matrices such as hair and nail is becoming extremely valuable in providing a broader picture of past drug consumption.
This is due to the incorporation of drugs consumed by the subject in the hair and nail keratin matrices, offering a much wider detection window than conventional biological matrices. In addition to the non-invasive nature of sample collection, hair and nail specimens are easy to transport and store, which minimizes the risk of sample alteration and degradation overtime. Despite its rise in popularity, drug detection in keratinized matrices remains challenging due to the low concentration of drugs embedded in the keratin matrix. As a result, hair and nail analysis requires sensitive instrumentation and extensive validation. 
This webinar will focus on the method development and validation of LC-MS/MS-based methods required to perform comprehensive and sensitive drug analysis in keratinized matrices. Case examples of the use of these methods will be demonstrated, highlighting the need for high-sensitivity mass spectrometry instrumentation for low-level detection of drugs and metabolites in hair and nail samples. The result presented will highlight the benefits of hair and nail analyses in forensic applications, enabling researchers to obtain significant retrospective information about past exposure and long-term use of drugs in the consumer’s population.

Mass spectrometry is a commonly employed platform for quantifying analytes. For polymers and complicated mixtures, the lack of standards and the difficulty in representing the large intact molecule make quantitation difficult if not impossible.In this presentation, the quantitation of previously unquantifiable analytes will be described. These analytes include polysaccharides, large protein mixtures and their posttranslational modifications, and complicated mixtures such as oligosaccharides in human milk.Polysaccharides are digested by a chemical enzyme and the resulting oligosaccharides are used to quantitate the intact polysaccharide using LC-MS and dynamic MRM methods. Human milk oligosaccharides are quantified using a selected number of standards and interpolating the abundances of those without standards to obtain the absolute abundances of nearly a hundred analytes.Protein mixtures are quantified using total protein quantification method while further employing these values with selected protein standards to obtain absolute quantitation of hundreds of proteins in bovine milk. Additionally, quantitation of glycan modification on proteins using dynamic MRM monitors the glycosylation of individual sites on proteins in serum.<blockquote>Presenter: &nbsp;Carlito Lebrilla, Ph.D. (Professor of Analytical Chemistry, University of California at Davis)Dr. Carlito B. He has served as Chair of the Chemistry Department. His research is in Analytical Chemistry, primarily mass spectrometry with applications to clinical glycomics and biofunctional food. He has nearly 400 peer-reviewed publications. He is also Co-Chief editor of Mass Spectrometry Reviews and has been on the editorial board of Molecular and Cellular Proteomics, Mass Spectrometry Reviews, Journal of American Society for Mass Spectrometry, European Mass Spectrometry, and International Journal of Mass Spectrometry.</blockquote>
