<p><strong>Packaging materials, among them plastics, are now the focus of the circular economy. The recent legislation establishes the elimination of single use plastics and the use of a high percentage of recycled materials in the packaging, even in those used for food applications. Among the postconsumer plastics, PET has been taken as the primary objective for recycling and nowadays the recycling technologies for PET are well advanced, thus producing very high quality of rPET. However, the case of polyolefins is very different. In a recent study carried out in our lab, more than 450 substances were identified in rHDPE and many of them were above the acceptable limits for food contact. It is quite obvious that the use of recycled polyolefins is not ready yet.</strong></p>
<p>The first principle is to guarantee the safety in use. But for this purpose, advanced analytical techniques are required, as the forest of peaks/substances released from the recycled polyolefins is still a nightmare. Usually, when analyzing the leachables/migration the problem is not to detect them, but to identify the individual substances and confirm their identity versus the corresponding standards. Unfortunately, many of the released chemicals don’t have standards available and thus, the confirmation and later quantification is not possible. New advanced techniques, such as ion mobility (IMS) in high resolution mass spectrometry and the use of libraries provide new tools for this purpose.</p>
<p>The presentation will show details of analytical methodology used, a few case studies and the available libraries containing more than 10,000 substances detected worldwide from packaging materials with the IMS data.</p>

<p><strong>The separation and analysis of lipids and lipid-based formulations like mRNA vaccines by chromatography in conjunction with spectrometry can be challenging. Many lipids lack a chromophore and not all lipid classes have an appropriate retention on reversed-phase. Separation on normal phase followed by a rapid derivatization with primuline simplifies lipid analysis in many cases.</strong></p>

We will present the potential of HPTLC in the field of lipids. 

<p><strong>The momentous success of mRNA vaccines has prompted the exploration of new analytical approaches for supporting the development, production and deployment of new nucleic acid therapeutics.</strong></p>
<p>Broader acceptance of MS-based sequencing techniques has been hampered by size limitations where approximately 25-30 nucleotides is the upper practical limit at which full-sequence coverage is achievable by top-down MS. A typical bottom-up strategy for tackling strands containing hundreds of nucleotides involves digesting the initial substrate into smaller products amenable to subsequent tandem MS.</p>
<p>In the quest to devise a mid-down strategy, we have been exploring how to increase the upper practical limit of tandem MS analysis. At the same time, we have been developing strategies for controlling the efficiency of the digestion step, in such a way as to minimize the formation of non-informative products, while maximizing the yield of products with sizes in the upper range accessible by tandem MS.</p>

<p><strong>Welcome to the 2022 Detection and Quantification of PFAS in Air, Water, Soil, and Food Packaging e-learning series.</strong></p>
<p><strong>In the third event of our three-part eSeminar series, a leading expert in PFAS analysis will discuss a variety of topics around PFAS in food packaging materials, including method development and sample preparation.</strong></p>
<p>A non-intentionally added substance or NIAS, in packaging is an issue of growing concern. First mentioned in EU Regulation 10/2011, predictable and unpredictable NIAS, in the form of degradation products and impurities, were found not only in plastic but also in paper and in newly developed materials, such as recycled and biobased packaging.</p>
<p>In the case of recycled materials, there is a new type of NIAS, which comes from recycling cycles: an accumulation of different mixture of chemicals might occur when materials are recycled many times. The prediction, identification and control of NIAS in recycled materials is therefore challenging because of the difficulty tracing their origin.</p>
<p>Due to the complex identification of the contamination pathway, chemicals like PFAS can be considered to be both intentionally and non-intentionally added. Some PFAS molecules are included for use and find market applications in food contact materials due to their grease- and water-proof properties. In this case they are intentionally added. This is frequent in paper packaging; and when this also has a recycled content, PFAS can be present as NIAS, originating from the intentionally added PFAS in the recycled paper fibres, or from inks, for example. </p>
<p>Environmental contamination should also not be ignored, where PFAS can be introduced in paper packaging from water used during the recycling or manufacturing process or from the atmosphere. </p>
<p>Distinguishing between these sources is important: new instrumental technologies and approaches are needed, not only for analytical efficiency and for performance, but also to open up the identification and quantification of what is predictable and what is not.</p>

<p>Andrea Vittadello co-ordinates the group of Project Managers in Mérieux NutriSciences Food Science Center and is himself Project Manager for the Sustainability area. He has been part of this laboratory since 2002 and has been involved almost immediately in biodegradability studies. He is a member of the European Bioplastics Technical Committee and the BPI Committee on Standards and Procedures. He is also currently Convenor at two CEN groups for Specific and Global Migrations, and of a UNI committee on Food Contact Materials.</p>
